State bill could weaken historic preservation laws | Online Athens

This bill hits close to home as my late father and grandmother owned 13 houses on various pieces of property - some developed - some not - in Druid Hills - and one of the houses is slated for destruction even though the Druid Hills Historical Society and DeKalb County have said that the property is not moldy enough to be razed. Stephanie Stuckey Benfield and Doug McKillip are on opposite sides of this bill and once again something in the middle is what we will get. Local and state officials frustrated with redistricting referendum | Online Athens

Does anyone else think this nonbinding referendum is an acute waste of our preciou$ taxpayer resources and it is downright criminal that the local GOP delegation is holding the Athens-Clarke County government hostage to the cost of one police officer? Why do the Republicans pretend they represent us when they cannot even help protect us? If indeed this March referendum turns out, I hope voters by the score turn out to start with tossing Rep. McKillip out on his ass in the forthcoming GOP primary against Regina Quick. I would strongly encourage anyone in Athens-Clarke to do so. We've finally settled on this year's slate of books for the book group sponsored by the Oconee Democrats. Join us sometime! I think you'll find the list very diverse -- with a play, some terrific writing about science, a handful of classics, and new works, too. We meet the last Wednesday of every month at Piccolo's in the Bell's shopping center in Watkinsville. Come at 6:30 if you'd like to order dinner or a drink. We'll get the discussion underway at 7. Please pass this list along to people you know who might be interested in joining us. Attendees include people from various counties and with different political affiliations, too.
