Watkinsville gets a drive-thru Jittery Joe's by June

Watkinsville will join the rest of the caffienated nation with a Jittery Joe's to go looking a lot like the upscale edition of the most recent Athens edition of the franchise on Baxter Street. The new store - perhaps as early as May to pour great local roasts - will feature a sign saying Jittery Joe's welcomes you to downtown Watkinsville, and be right at the intersection of State Highways 15 and the business route of 441/129 in what was an eyesore for the city in a dilapidated old Golden Pantry turned hunting goods store. Mayor Jim Luken asked the new owner Kerry King to try and pave the driveway a little better than just sealing it (as he wanted to originally wanted to do), but otherwise the computer programmer-turned-coffee-store-owner was greeted as a welcome conquering hero. The city also approved a new high end art gallery for town center and the relocation of Salon Red hair studio making five of those inside of a mile in Watkinsville. This meeting also represented the re

Letter to all Oconee County Democrats

Image
Dear Oconee County Democrats: We need your support, and our country needs your support. Democrats in Oconee County are many and have fantastic gifts to offer their community. However, many of us think there’s no chance to impact Oconee County, Georgia, or our Country because the Republicans run everything. This is not the case. At the minimum we can help shape the debate in all levels by actively participating; if all our efforts are fruitful we will place Democrats in positions where they can work to improve our government. We’re asking you to share your talents with us to build a country level organization that can present progressive values to our community. Here’s what we can do: 1. All Democrats need to become members of the Oconee County Democrats. We need to increase our efforts in order to ensure that our Democratic values are expressed in every corner of our Country. We need to be seen at every meeting. 2. Consider participating in the Democracy Bonds project of the Dem

Brian lets us know about an Athens law firm fleeing to Bogart

Watkinsville Councilman Brian Brodrick does PR work by day in the beautifully refurbished Hodgson Oil Building downtown in Athens (formerly the site of the I and I Club, Buckhead Beach and numerous great rock shows in practice space kind of place) for Jackson-Spalding - this might be one of his releases. My only comment would be the new address is not mentioned and I do not even know for certain if that is mailing address Bogart out there. I presume it is. It sure is not in the city limits of Bogart proper. That is where the big development is for our county. We need a better branding of that area other than the technolgy corridor and better building names. Bogart City Council gets ugly

Image
Bogart City Council March 6, 2006 Oconee Living Section Athens Banner-Herald Bogart Mayor questioned about son’s engineering firm By Daniel J. Matthews, Jr. Correspondent “We are pretty much stagnant in the water here, guys,” said Mayor Jan Thurmond to the lack of business growth reflected in an identical budget this fiscal year, but she might as well had been describing the tenor of the meeting with the Bogart City Council Monday evening. Bogart Council member Gary Gunter garnered an addition to the agenda that caught Mayor Jan Thurmond off guard. “City Engineers, what’s that about?” asked the Mayor Thurmond? “I had that added on there,” answered the soft-spoken council member. He explained his discomfort with the engineering decisions made by Armentrout, Roebuck and Matheny and in particular, the mayor’s son Bret, who has been sitting at the table for the last several months. Council members Terri Glenn and Woody Bruce echoed Gunter’s sentiment, as did a member of the audience aft
