Nate Silver at least gives Georgia a slim chance (not solidly Republican) of electing a Democratic Senator in 2014

Can Republicans Win the Senate in 2014?

Who did I vote for, who do I endorse, who do I think will win?

Here in the heavily Republican Oconee County, the G.O.P. primary is tantamount to a general election in many instances. For this reason this lifelong liberal Democratic party supporter and activist has chosen to select the Republican primary ballot for the last several primary election cycles so as to have at least a smidgen of influence on local governance. I always try to vote on the first day of advance voting as to provide some insight as a public service. I may be a bit too proud about any supposed impact on the general election, but there are some very germane and general observations that can be made. Tammy Gilland has run the most professional and thorough campaign I have ever seen in Oconee County. She has mailed out slick postcards, she has probably jogged on every street that can be run, and she has done an excellent job of introducing herself to voters in Waktinsville and Bogart. She speaks her mind and has addressed the perception that she is somehow Board of Commissio...

Oconee County came crashing to the ground in 2009

Many of the long standing myths surrounding Oconee County Georgia were dashed this year, including that of the never ending economic growth for the county and the supposed superiority of the School System were done in by a series of scandals and decisions which were seemingly not very popular with the majority of the local populace. Oconee County can no longer count on continued expansion of subdivisions in every direction as we have countless "PVC farms" and ghost towns in considerable corners of the main arteries ranging from Hog Mountain Road to Whitehall/Simonton Bridge Road. One can only hope for the local economy to improve well enough in 2010 where there will once again have need to build houses and have people living in them out here next year. The lack of some essential services in this county continues to come up perilously close to causing us some serious problems, but so far our government has done exactly what it needs to support our local police officers and...

Weather is fine, get out there and vote

Call up everybody you know and make sure they have voted as well. Text your entire cell phone directory and ask them if they have voted or need a ride. Blast an email to your entire address book in all your email accounts and remind them to get out their and cast their vote. Today is the day to do it if you have not already. Parties are everywhere this evening in downtown Athens. Clarke County Democratic Committee thanks to Mike Hamby at the Melting Point, Bobby Saxon at the VFW hall and UGA Law Dawgs are at the Georgia Theater. The GOP is meeting at the Masters Hall of the Georgia Center of Continuing Education. I will predict that voters shall return incumbent city council member Joe Walter narrowly over Luke Bishop locally 51-49% in the lone contested Municipal Election in Watkinsville. The turnout of voters will be very high but somewhat hampered by the incongruity of having to vote in advance in two separate locations at two times might shave off a couple of dozen votes in an impo...

Proud of the Hawkeye State

I have lived in Georgia more than a quarter century with my father's family going seven generations deep on a hilltop in Druid Hills, but I grew up in the great state of Iowa in a rather interesting political climate. My mother Norma S. Matthews was part of the apparatus adjusting the Iowa Caucuses to the front of the line in 1972. We hosted a caucus at our house on 44th st.eet "Snake Drive" where people huddled in corners to declare their allegiance to everyone from Hubert Humphrey to Edmund Muskie to Scoop Jackson and George McGovern. My mom was the co-chair of the McGovern campaign and we had quite a parade of people through our living room and guest rooms that year, including Bill and Hillary, Gary Hart, and many others less famous. McGovern came in third that evening but won in the expectations game, doing better than was thought possible, and the Senator from South Dakota won the elusive momentum factor into New Hampshire and Wisconsin on to the nomination. Every ...
