Schools' Out means reconstruction of Butler's Crossing intersection as we know it

Watkinsville, Ga. – Georgia DOT announces new construction work will begin tomorrow in the area of Oconee Middle School for the widening of Mars Hill Road, if weather allows. “So far not much has happened near the schools. No lane closures are planned at the School but crews will move in tomorrow to begin demolishing the existing fence and asphalt then grading and installing the new drainage system. Crews are continuing to build new culverts, grading, installation of drainage and installing new utility lines along the project,” explained Harold Mull, Georgia DOT District Construction Engineer. The project will widen Mars Hill Road/Oconee Connector from State Route 316 to State Route 53/Hog Mountain Road improving mobility locally in Watkinsville and for the region in to and out of Clarke County. The new road will have four lanes that are 12 feet wide with a 20 feet wide grassy median. It will also have bike lanes and a sidewalk in each direction. As part of the pro

Photos from Oconee County Jail paperback book donation by Oconee County Democratic Committee members

Image
Sincerely,  Dan Matthews The attached photos were taken this afternoon around 1 p.m. when we took the last of the books from the book drive to replenish the Oconee County Jail Library. Sheriff Berry and Officer Amber Shelnutt greeted us and showed us the library. I'm guessing that around 1000 books were collected. Officer Shelnutt had them beautifully arranged on carts and in cases according to category. I think I speak for Oconee County Democrats and people in the Sheriff's Office in saying this project would be classified a win-win endeavor. I don't think it created an enormous burden for any one individual, but working together as a great team it can be labeled a big success. Thanks everyone, Margaret

Timely text lets Chops & Hops know they are up for liquor license, prevails at Watkinsville City Council meeting

The clink of liquor-filled glasses will soon be resonating at Chops & Hops restaurant on Main Street after the Watkinsville City Council approved its first distilled spirits application Wednesday at the Community Center near the end of the regular May meeting. City council member Mike Link maintained his staunch anti-alcohol stance by remaining the lone member of Watkinsville elected refusing to support legitimate and proper applications before the city to increase the tax base. Municipal voters actually approved a liquor-by-the-drink referendum twice in consecutive elections due to a lack of being able to distinguish votes from those with a Watkinsville mailing address (but not in the city limits). The otherwise unanimous vote nearly was tabled if not for the quick thinking of one Watkinsville resident who sent a text message to the busy restaurant tabling customers Wednesday night, the first night of summer vacation in the Oconee County school system. Largest tax hike in GA history

Image
Begin forwarded message: From: "Bryan Long, Better Georgia" bryan@bettergeorgia.com Subject: Largest tax hike in GA history Date: May 18, 2015 at 9:45:49 AM EDT To: "Dan Matthews" < danjmatt@bellsouth.net > Reply-To: bryan@bettergeorgia.com   Gov. Nathan Deal's legacy is now set. In just 45 days we'll all begin   paying higher taxes on gas and hotels   -- thanks to Gov. Deal's largest tax hike in Georgia history. Gov. Deal will be known as the Republican who finally admitted defeat on fiscally conservative policies. With his actions,   he proved that conservative rhetoric simply doesn't work. The bad part is that tax-and-spend Deal just charged us $1 billion a year for more asphalt -- stretching to fund just the   bare minimum   of what the state needs to keep up with growth. Even worse, Gov. Deal's tax hike hits working Georgians hardest. Gov. Deal's tax plan is designed to tax those who make the least

How would you get to Athens if all the normal ways were closed?

This got me thinking, as I tend to do after any small disaster, what route to Athens would I take if all of the sudden, Barnett Shoals Road in Watkinsville was closed as it was in this wreck, Simonton Bridge was closed as it started to be today with the five foot shaving at the intersection with Milledge Avenue, and take into effect the old Macon Highway with the recently extinguished smoldering remains of the Puritan Cord Mill closing that route. Yes I could still wander around to Atlanta Highway and or the 10 Loop, but sometimes we do take for granted our frequented paths and usual journeys.  What is your favorite secret way to Athens, taking these out of the calculation? http://onlineathens.com/breaking-news/2015-05-19/driver-trapped-overturned-truck-oconee-county-rescue-workers-site
