Yes, I was the one who nominated Herman C. Michael Park's court for this grant

OK, so here is the background on this, in case anyone wonders.  Yes, once upon a time I was the gym supervisor of the John T. Brannen Building of Herman C. Michael Park in Oconee County, back in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I pushed a broom around the court and checked people's IDs to make sure they were not coming in from Athens-Clarke (or Morgan or Madison or Oglethorpe as people would travel for new courts). We would often see the Carlos Strong - Terrell Bell Cedar Shoals McDonald's All American types to come in and politely slam on our then pristine new indoor courts. Carlos now has a Sunday basketball academy across the street. Outside even then there was a crumbling court adjacent to the big indoor building. The double rims were unfriendly and the court was poorly marked.  There are crack marks, pock marks, peeled paint and general disrepair and maybe even some grass or weeds growing in the gaps. People barely played there back in the day, and I think it is even mor...

Oconee County will shut off sewer, water to mobile home park | Online Athens

This summer, while campaigning for the House of Representatives seat, I went through this trailer park and it blew my mind. In the middle of a Sunday afternoon, with detour signs in Spanish, several compadres were working on the sewer lines all by themselves. I do not pretend to have an answer to any of this, but obviously there is plenty of negligence to be spread around on all parties. I would counsel that cutting off the entire trailer park's services will only make matters worse, but one thing is for certain, people will continue to drink water and use the bathroom down there whether we like it or not. It is already an environmental disaster down there with the garbage. Do we really need to add another couple of dozen people defecating behind Trader Joe's? There will be a day in local politics (just not today)

There will be a day when issues are the center of the debate of the quality of the candidates, and not what they may or may not have done in their yard. There will be a day when rumors whispered about the candidates matter not to the voters, but instead the quality of the character of the candidates will reign supreme in the judgment of the electorate. There will be a day when people who publish photos of people's private residence will be scorned and dismissed as heinous personal attacks instead of impugning the integrity of the individual. There will be a day when the enthusiasm and posture of the candidates matter more than the what the person may or may not have done 35 years ago. There will be a day when the voters realize that substance of their expression and grasping of the ideals matters much more than who you are married to, or what you do for a living. That day is not today. That day will come in Watkinsville and elsewhere in Georgia. We have to keep trying, because what...
