Oconee County, GA Politics

Even though I am not running for office this time, it is very entertaining for me to be on the other side of the political process, i.e. getting asked by candidates to vote for them. Qualifying is this week at the Oconee County Board of Elections and Registration in Watkinsville. This morning the Oconee County Democratic Committee manned (and woman-ed) a table to register voters. We did not have signs indicating such but were successful in having a presence there to let people know that the Democratic Party is alive and well in Georgia, and we are registering new voters. Oconee County is unusually well registered as a county populace, where something like 90% of those eligible to register have already. So a large portion of the people we handed registration forms to today were people who needed to change an address because of moving back into the county or whatever. Even though this is not part of anything to do with Oconee County except the 10th congressional district, I thought it revealing to show how few people can make small headlines and skew results for the rest of the state. Oconee County Board of Commissioners Chairman G. Melvin Davis cast the tie-breaking vote to pass the beer and wine pouring ordinance for restaurants in unincorporated Oconee County yesterday . Conversely former Oconee County Republican party chair Sarah Bell tossed her hat into the ring to run against Davis for the nomination . I wish Ms. Bell the best of luck with her burgeoning trek but so far her campaign has a less than auspicious beginning. I wonder where local G.O.P. wunderkid Jay Hanley comes down on this race; I would imagine with Davis, but it will be interesting to see how the beer and wine issue ferments in the next several months. Her former party leadership position is also where the incumbent Davis started his ascension to the top of Oconee County Board of Commissioners position when a few members of the Republican party decided to purge the nomination of a firefighter and husband of the former Mayor of Bogart almost a decade back. This pretty much sums up the contempt that the Governors of the four Southern States have for the working media and bloggers. They will be down yonder in Greene County on the shores of the shriveling Lake Oconee not worrying about the water crisis or anything important.
