All is well on the campaign trail 2012 pre-qualifying GOP edition

Even though I am not running for office this time, it is very entertaining for me to be on the other side of the political process, i.e. getting asked by candidates to vote for them. Qualifying is this week at the Oconee County Board of Elections and Registration in Watkinsville.

This morning the Oconee County Democratic Committee manned (and woman-ed) a table to register voters. We did not have signs indicating such but were successful in having a presence there to let people know that the Democratic Party is alive and well in Georgia, and we are registering new voters.

Oconee County is unusually well registered as a county populace, where something like 90% of those eligible to register have already. So a large portion of the people we handed registration forms to today were people who needed to change an address because of moving back into the county or whatever. We do not attempt to proselytize, persuade or otherwise engage in blanket recruitment tactics. We just want to increase the voter rolls. We had our member of the Board of Elections and Registration on hand, and Dr. Robert Wyatt and his wife Ann Stoneburner took their hour at the helm. We will have signs next week indicating our presence and putting the word out.

Board of Commissioners chairmen candidates Chuck Horton and incumbent G. Melvin Davis talked to us at the same time, and the main subject of discussion was whether there would be any other candidates to join them in the race. Various people have heard various things, but the general consensus seems to be that Sarah Bell would take more away from challenger Horton rather than Chairman Davis, who she came so close to beating back four years ago.

Four years can be a lifetime in a political sense. Bell announced back then, almost a day after the 2008 race was over, that she fully intended to run again for the BOC chair slot this year.  Some questioned her resolve when she got in the 2011 Special Election for the House District 113 that yours truly got in and made the run off. Bell could not have been pleased with her results in that race. If it was indeed a referendum on her political viability, she did not pass.

Sheriff Scott Berry held a rally at the old Thornton House (now Ashford on Main) Friday with hundreds of visitors getting t-shirts, burgers from Chops and Hops, and yard signs. The very visible event was done with little fanfare and advanced notice this weekend. Berry has an old fashioned font on his signs hinting of the old West.

Saw former Board of Education candidate Chuck Toney among many others at the Farmers Market this morning. He said one person had called and asked him to run again, and he declined.

So who is the only candidate blatantly violated all known laws with regard to size and dates of when you can have them up? That would of course be Republican Congressman Paul Broun who seems oblivious to all the laws regarding the time allowed to have campaign signs up (that would be after qualifying) and the size (2' by 3' on each size). But obviously campaign laws do not apply to our Congressman.
