Watkinsville City Council votes its Mayor a $2,500 pay raise

The Watkinsville City Council decided to increase the annual salary of the Mayor in a special called meeting Tuesday evening at the Community Center. Council member Brian Brodrick made a motion and was seconded by Toby Smith to increase the pay $2,500.00 next fiscal year beginning July 1, 2012. The salary will increase from $7,200.00 to $9,800.00. A special condition was added that any future pay increases be discussed by that particular council and not set in stone by this particular pay raise. After hearing many reservations voiced by council members Mike Link and Henry Norman, the measure passed unanimously.  Council member Samantha Purcell was unable to attend, as was city attorney Joe Reitman, Jr. absent. At one point city clerk Julie Sanders attempted to call Reitman at the behest of outgoing Mayor Joe Walter, only to receive voice mail. They were asking to make sure the qualifying fees would remain the same next week. Walter refereed the brief event with his same concerned and

Oconee County Courthouse finally getting roof work done beginning Wednesday - be careful driving around there

We are all aware that we have had numerous roof leaks during periods of heavy rain, and we are all aware that we have damaged and inoperable air conditioning units on the roof that impact primarily the 3 rd floor. Within the next 2 weeks Ben Hill Roofing Company will begin the process of replacing the roof membrane and 2 rooftop air conditioners on the Courthouse. They will primarily access the roof from the outside with ladders.  They will be working during the normal workday as well as at night and on weekends. With good weather, work is expected to take about 1 month. However, in order to repair these significant problems, there will be unavoidable inconveniences. Listed below are some things that will be issues during this work: The 5 reserved parking spaces used by Deputies and Judges along 3 rd street will be closed and utilized for material staging and dumpster use. The employee entrances on each side may have to be closed temporarily at times during crane oper

Drive carefully through Harris Shoals Park during paving

Weather permitting; resurfacing of Harris Shoals Park Road will begin Monday August 29 th .   The project is expected to be completed by Friday, September 02.   The park will remain open during the work; however, the availability of parking will be limited and road construction equipment will be operating within the park during the hours of 7:00 AM and 6:00PM.   If you chose to visit the park during these times, please exercise caution. The City appreciates your understanding and patience over the last few months as we have endeavored to make Watkinsville’s Harris Shoals Park a prettier park than before.   Except for some incidental items like additional picnic tables and personal grills, the road work should be the last big project for the park.   These improvements were made possible by revenue received through the Special Local Option Sales Tax ( SPLOST).
