Oconee County Courthouse finally getting roof work done beginning Wednesday - be careful driving around there

We are all aware that we have had numerous roof leaks during periods of heavy rain, and we are all aware that we have damaged and inoperable air conditioning units on the roof that impact primarily the 3rd floor.

Within the next 2 weeks Ben Hill Roofing Company will begin the process of replacing the roof membrane and 2 rooftop air conditioners on the Courthouse. They will primarily access the roof from the outside with ladders.  They will be working during the normal workday as well as at night and on weekends. With good weather, work is expected to take about 1 month. However, in order to repair these significant problems, there will be unavoidable inconveniences. Listed below are some things that will be issues during this work:

The 5 reserved parking spaces used by Deputies and Judges along 3rd street will be closed and utilized for material staging and dumpster use.

The employee entrances on each side may have to be closed temporarily at times during crane operations in those areas. Public entry areas should not be effected during business hours.

Air conditioning to Courtroom #1 will be effected during this work due to both units serving that courtroom being replaced. There will likely be considerable noise in the Courtroom during this work.

There will be noise from the roof area due to the nature of the work. This will be especially noticeable on 3rd floor.

It will be necessary to close one lane along 3rd Street and Court Street at times for material staging with a crane.

Dumpsters and pallets of material may be staged along each side of the building temporarily during this process.

We will do our best to minimize issues and major disturbances, but they will occur. We ask for your patience and your understanding so this work can be completed in as timely a manner as possible. I will make every effort to communicate dates, times, etc. that a particular area will be effected when I have that information. If you have issues or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me.

All,

As planned, material staging for the Courthouse roof project started today. More materials will be delivered on Wednesday 8/24 in the early morning. The crew will also begin staging materials onto the roof with a boom truck on Wednesday. Materials are stored along 3rd Street, along Court Street, and in the rear parking lot.

Demolition of the old roofing material will begin at about midnight on Wednesday.  Each morning the 2 open dumpsters staged in front of the Elections building will be exchanged for empty  dumpsters. Please take caution when walking or driving around the courthouse during the next few weeks.

If you have questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me.
