Oconee Democratic Book Club April book selection: Catch 22 by Joseph Heller

Image
I applaud the selections, the authors, the audacity of a group bold enough to try to spread ideas of liberty and freedom through literature, and anyone with the balls to try to expand the literacy of an otherwise backwoods country county with a bunch of people meeting in a deli to compare notes on books they love or do not care for and why. Go check it out in the Oconee County Library. Click on the links and order the book and I may actually see a few pennies someday out of your purchase. Subject: April book selection Hello! Could you please help me get the word out about the book choice for our April discussion?  We're reading the classic "Catch 22." I really appreciate your assistance.  Our group keeps growing and is increasingly diverse. Thank you! A book well worth reading for your Valentine - will you be mine?

Image
These publications listed and linked repeatedly below in a brazen commercial attempt on my part are the current selection for the Oconee County Democratic Committee's book club and it sounds like a perfect tome for the season Learning to link, and linking to learn, Daniel J. Matthews, Jr. Date: Sun, 7 Feb 2010 09:45:15 -0500 Subject: [oconee] A book well worth reading   Hello! If you've never joined us for the book group sponsored by the Oconee Democrats, this month would be a great place to start! We're reading . . . and some people are happily rereading . . . the wonderful A Sand County Almanac  by Aldo Leopold. Pick up a copy of this and read it aloud to your Valentine! Read it if you're depressed about what's going on in the world or in America. Read it if you'd like to know more about nature to explain to your child or grandchild. Read it if you're forgotten to look up at the sky to see the stars or clouds. Give a copy to p...

Oconee County Democrats book club puritanical selection includes author Sarah Vowell and her new work The Wordly Shipmates

Dr. Patricia Priest, not the one who starred on the old TV series "The Munsters" but instead the radio producer and activist who lives in Oconee County, has selected another interesting tome for discussion. Daniel J. Matthews, Jr. Subject: [oconee] Books of interest We're reading about the Puritans this Thanksgiving month! The book group sponsored by the Oconee Democrats will discuss the New York Times bestseller "The Wordy Shipmates" at 6 PM at the Five Points Deli on Epps Bridge Parkway on November 18th. We're meeting earlier in the month than usual because of the Thanksgiving holidays. The author, Sarah Vowell, is a quirky essayist and frequent contributor to the wonderful public radio show "This American Life." The Washington Post describes the book -- her latest -- this way: "Vowell's funny, imaginative take on musty, buckled-up Pilgrim notables brings the era wickedly to life." The Cleveland Plain Dea...

Obama versus McCain Book Challenge

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Pat Priest 706-353-8310 ppriest@charter.net McCain v. Obama Book Challenge The Oconee Democrats are issuing a challenge for people in the region to learn more about both Senator John McCain and Senator Barack Obama by reading and discussing both men’s autobiographies. Participants will discuss McCain’s “Worth the Fighting For” in September and Obama’s “The Audacity of Hope” in October at moderated sessions in Oconee and Athens-Clarke County. Both books are inspiring bestsellers. William Kristol of The Weekly Standard characterized McCain’s book as “a gripping story, and well told, and one that serves as an accessible and lively introduction to the last quarter century of American politics.” Publishers Weekly said of “The Audacity of Hope”: “Obama writes insightfully, with vivid firsthand observations, about politics and the compromises forced on politicians by fund-raising, interest groups, the media and legislative horse-trading.” The event organizer, ...
