Friend -- This movement is about people like Kelsey K. Kelsey is a 63-year-old part-time teacher from Greencastle, Indiana. Last week, she made more than 200 calls to make sure Hoosiers in her community are planning on voting this fall. She talked to a 19-year-old recent high school graduate. He's currently unemployed and living with his mom, a single parent. Kelsey talked to him about the importance of this fall's elections, and she secured his commitment to vote. And she got him so fired up that now, in between job-hunting, he's calling up his former classmates and making sure they're committed to voting on November 2nd, too. Conversations like that one will win help us win races this fall. That's why, today, we're launching our 7 in 7 campaign -- reaching out to voters 7 million times on the phones and on the doors in seven days -- right up to the start of the final GOTV push next weekend. Join supporters like Kelsey and use our call tool ...

North Oconee radio contract attempts to circumvent 1st Amendment

Once again Oconee County high school athletics manages to shoot itself in the foot on the brink of a brilliant season.  Too bad for the Titans. Too bad for the football playing kids who are giving it their all. Too bad for the parents who have to stay at home with young ones. Too bad for the people from other counties enjoying North Oconee's fantastic season. Remember the Titans, but forget this BS propagated by a few selfish bureaucrats and administrators who should be banished immediately from having anything to do with our kids' athletic endeavors. I also feel badly for the coaches who are doing a magnificent job with the young people at North Oconee High School without having to worry about some selfish decision that flies in the face of the freedom of the press. For their sake, I hope the Titans make it to the State Playoffs where their administrators' petty contracts will be laughed at and rendered meaningless. Keep in mind WMOQ 92.3 FM already broadcast a North O...

Musical karma can be a bitch

So the next to last chapter of the contentious Athens-Clarke County 5th district Commissioner race between Jared Bailey, Dave Hudgins and Tom Ellis is that non-registered voter Bill Holmes - who along with his wife Pam decided to take out affidavits alleging who knows what - was summarily dismissed from the Athens rock band Bomber City (featuring former members of Guadalcanal Diary and friends). The band also cancelled a November 5th concert at the Melting Point due to sudden unforeseen personnel changes. Jeff Walls and Murray Attaway, I salute you. If you are going to get involved in the pissing match that is politics, at least have the balls to be registered to vote.

Today, join the Commit to Vote Challenge

Image
Friend -- None of us can sit this election out. Not when we're just beginning to see the results of the change we've all been working for, and when there's still so much left to do. That's why this election is so important, and that's why we can't let complacency overtake us in these last few days. I have two things to ask of you. First, Barack and I need you to commit to vote this fall. And with so much at stake, we need to make sure your friends and family get out to vote as well. The best person in the world for that job is you. That's why OFA is launching its Commit to Vote Challenge. It's a powerful way for you to commit to vote in this election -- and then have fun while inspiring your friends to do the same. Get started here. We know from Barack's campaign that when you get someone to make a commitment, they're far more likely to follow through. So OFA is making it as easy as possible for you to get everyone you kno...

Slings and Arrows

Lately, I've had it up to here

Image
Friend -- Remember when the GOP was in control? They drove up record deficits to pass tax cuts for the wealthy at the expense of the middle class. And now they want to do it again. If they take over Congress, Republicans have promised to go back to the "exact same agenda" that drove our economy into a ditch. You can't make this stuff up. The exact same agenda. So I'm going to do everything I can to make sure they don't get the chance. We have a plan in place and 13 days to get it done -- but each and every one of us needs to do what we can today. Please donate $3 today to help us keep them out of power. For months, our opponents sat on the sidelines while you helped the President and our allies in Congress move America forward. Republicans are still clutching that same political playbook. And folks like Sharron Angle in Nevada, Ron Johnson in Wisconsin, and Tom Corbett in Pennsylvania want to go beyond the failed policies of the past. Backed by...

The final weekend

Friend -- Forget the "enthusiasm gap." Here's the real story about who is more fired up and ready to go -- just as our campaigns shift into GOTV (get-out-the-vote) mode. Reports are coming in from across the country of record early voting turnout in key states like Ohio and Iowa -- with Democratic turnout far outpacing our opponents. On Saturday, OFA volunteers reached out to more than 1 million voters in a single day -- levels we haven't seen since the closing days of the presidential campaign two years ago. And on Sunday night, Barack and Michelle Obama spoke to more than 35,000 Ohioans about these final two weeks. It was the largest rally since the inauguration. But none of that will be enough unless we continue building through the final days of this election. Will you sign up to fill a crucial GOTV shift in the final four days of our Vote 2010 campaign? As the President said in Columbus, "there's no more important time to be out ...

Oconee Democrats Regular Monthly Meeting, 10/21/2010, 7:00 pm

Image
Will local Democratic Board of Education candidate Carter Strickland make it to this meeting at Jittery Joe's? I have the next to last regular season soccer game coaching duties this evening, so I will not make it. Chairman Veit expressed his astonishment over this to me in some emails exchanged last night. I would direct him that he has much more significant things to concern himself over, the least of which would be getting the party's official website back up and running, or the location of the forthcoming whistle stop tour, or getting out the vote, or a new secretary for the party, or logistics and support for the second green showcase, then whether I may or may not have misrepresented his thoughts on a listserv no one else reads any how. If I did, I am truly sorry. I wish everyone the best of luck in the final fortnight of an increasingly insane campaign season. Woven sadly,  Daniel J.
