October 3rd, 4th and 5th: we are hosting a living history event to commemorate the 149th anniversary of Stonemans Raid on Watkinsville. We are planning to recreate the event by bringing in re-enactors and transforming part of Watkinsville to 1864. The event will consist of a soldiers camp, cavalry demonstrations, a ladies tea, and a story teller with stories from the area, a broom maker, a photographer and many "famous people" that will entertain with their encounters before, during and after the war. We are coming to you for help because in order to make this a success we need lots of things. The largest need is money - in the way of supplies, gas cards, water, ice and prepared food for the re-enactors, hay, and grain for the horses, printing of banners and flyers, as well as volunteers. Sons of Confederate Veterans The Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) is a 501(c)(3)  non-political heritage organization formed in Richmond, VA. in 1896.  It is not affiliated with any other organization. With more than 30,000 members, its aims are patriotic and educational. Membership is open to both lineal and collateral descendants of those who served honorably in the Confederate armed forces. The SCV has ongoing programs, meetings and activities at the national, state (division) , and local (camp) levels. Preservation work, marking Confederate soldiers' graves, historical reenactments, and regular meetings are activities sponsored by local camps. The SCV strives to see that history is presented accurately and to defend the good name of the Confederate soldier. Subject: speaker for next meeting The Oconee County Historical Society and OCAF invites all those interested in learning more about our local Civil War history to come to a talk given by Sam Thomas, curator of the T.R.R. Cobb House on Monday February 21 at 7:00pm in the auditorium of the OCAF building in downtown Watkinsville. Mr. Thomas' talk brings to life the Athens Home Guard, known as Mitchell's Thunderbolts, a Civil War militia formed to protect the town and did so in their own unique style. In 1863, with   Georgia   being threatened with a Union invasion from   Tennessee   many communities began to form their own local guard units to protect the towns in the case of attack. These militia groups were known as Home Guards and were generally made up of men either too old to serve in the regular army or those who could no longer serve and been discharged due to wounds, or young boys under the age of regular service (15 and under).   Athens   w...

The Oconee County Democratic Committee has a subgroup called the Blue Hats and they have been the catalyst for the past and present Christmas parade performances and entries. We have had horse drawn carriages and assorted other parade tactics, but this year the local Democrats plan to hand out cards to be sent to Veterans. The idea will be to try and hand out as many cards as possible during the parade route Dec. 1. Trying to sing and explain what we are doing will be a challenge, but hey, anything is possible, including bringing our troops home alive from Iraq and Afghanistan.
