64 votes makes all the difference in the world

I certainly do not claim responsibility for getting State Representative Doug McKillip defeated, but I did my damnedest to help. The Oconee County Democratic Committee, of which I was elected chair for a second time, did not defeat Doug and elect Regina Quick to the Georgia House of Representatives from the 117th district, but we certainly mobilized voters in the three precincts in Oconee County and informed voters in Jackson, Barrow and Clarke County. There are Democrats and conservative Repubicans who banded together to get McKillip tossed out of office. Some live in the district, others do not. I do not think the McKillips are bad people, but political karma can be a bitch. I would suggest Colonel Hoke Wilder is one unsung hero, having put up 60 signs around Athens and Oconee Counties. A lot of people like my friend Matt Chastain worked hard behind the scenes. Some such as former State Representative Bob Smith recorded radio spots. I did a robo-call but still do not know if they a

Book for August: "Deer Hunting with Jesus"

Get this book and learn about rednecks Sincerely,  Dan Matthews  Subject: [oconee] Book for August: "Deer Hunting with Jesus"  For August, the book group the Oconee Democrats sponsor is reading Joe  Bageant's "Deer Hunting with Jesus."  Here's part of the description from amazon: "'Deer Hunting with Jesus' is [popular] web columnist Joe Bageant's  report on what he learned when he moved back to his hometown of  Winchester, Virginia, which -- like countless American small towns -- is  fast becoming the bedrock of a permanent underclass. By turns brutal,  tender, incendiary, and seriously funny, this book is a call to arms for  fellow progressives with little real understanding of "the great beery,  NASCAR-loving, church-going, gun-owning America that has never set foot  in a Starbucks." The book should be in soon at Books Galore in Watkinsville. Come join us to talk about the working poor in our

In the Loop

Tuesday is Primary Day - get out and vote please

Tuesday, July 31st is the Primary Day in the State of Georgia. The polls are open from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm at your usual polling place. Here is a link for polling places in Oconee County and three of these precincts (Athens Academy, Malcolm Bridge and Bogart) get to vote in the Regina Quick-Doug McKillip race for the Georgia House of Representatives. I have made a robo-call in favor of voting for Regina Quick and would hope that voters would recognize the reasons I have listed previously why to vote for her instead of McKillip. In Oconee County, there is almost no reason whatsoever to choose a Democratic ballot - and this is coming from the chair of the Oconee County Democratic Committee. I have listed before what I think is best for Oconee County, and I will briefly do so again. I believe it is in Oconee County's best interest to vote for Chuck Horton over Melvin Davis for Chairman of the Board of Commissioners. I think that it will be in the best interests of Oconee County
