Caterpillar breaks ground on Oconee/Clarke plant in Bogart and Athens area

I greatly welcome Caterpillar with open arms and deep pockets. Plenty of people are already seeing dollar signs in their eyes with putting homes up for sale in the area or at least making plans to do so. I would imagine a lot of the stagnant developments may finally get built or at least more built out than they have. My only real complaint, and yes it is self-serving and tawdry, is that they could have been more inclusive in the guest list for this event. Most definitely President Barack Obama could have and should have been there, and I understand his Georgia agenda for the day started at 4:00 pm. I would have liked to have seen the event not be so exclusive as to not have anyone from the loyal opposition in either party from either county.  Caterpillar should make efforts to connect with the public at large and not just the elite who belong to the right country club and or Chamber of Commerce. Run off predictions/theroums/equivacations

If former Athens Tax Commissioner Nancy Denson wins the forthcoming Athens Mayoral run-off Tuesday, November 30, 2010, then Dave Hudgins should win the District 5 Commissioner race against AthFest founder Jared Bailey. If Gwen O'Looney wins the Athens Mayoral run-off, then it will be a cakewalk for Jared Bailey against Hudgins. Their battle over labels and names on the radio this morning demonstrates the challenges for both candidates in the next 24 days.

4 Oconee sites granted designation by NEGRDC

Many thanks to Watkinsville Mayor Joe Walter, Oconee County Chair G. Melvin Davis and Oconee County State Bank owner Amrey Hardin for voting to include Elder Mill Bridge and the neighboring Mill, the largely unused railroad line and the Apalachee River as regionally important sites by the Northeast Georgia Regional Development Commission Wednesday at the Holiday Inn in Athens. Oconee County Observation blogger and UGA Journalism Professor Lee Becker as always goes the extra mile in covering the event(s) that the local media largely ignored or ignores. Fwd: POLITICAL SIGN VANDALISM

Image
This sent into me by a reader I presume ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: William Sapp Date: Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 9:57 PM Subject: POLITICAL SIGN VANDALISM I live at the edge of Athens-Clarke County with a long Belmont Road frontage.  I've been engaged in a political sign war with vandals or perhaps just one vandal with a penchant for stealing Obama signs by the score.  Usually this slimy vandal(s) strikes in the dead of night...I must have replaced 20 signs!  Rarely signs disappear in broad daylight.  Are these anti-American types so stupid that they don't realize when they see twice as many signs reappear after they've struck that the candidate is benefiting more from their vandalism than ever?  I've spent around $100 just to keep up with him..but  by now I've had it.  I've resorted to  night stakeouts with flash digital camera, air horn, and cell phone poised to call the cops.  Are these thieves unawar...

It's not OK to joke about killing anyone - especially our leaders

There is a small brick house on Milledge Avenue near Five Points in Athens next to an old girlfriend's one-time house not far from Memorial Park at an intersection with a stop light. It is for sale and it has a Halloween display in front, neither of which by themselves makes this a remarkable story. It is that they have decided to place a fake headstone with a Barack Obama '08 sign on it that makes this so reprehensible. Why not go ahead and burn a cross and hang a noose from a tree? It is ugly, uncalled for and an embarrassment to all of Athens and surrounding areas. Political speech is protected speech, so therefore people can scream "Terrorist," "Treason" and "Kill him" at rallies for John McCain and Sarah Palin when attacking the character. It does not allow us to perpetuate a hateful mindset where joking about death, especially the death of one of the people who will be President of this country. You can express your political sentiments witho...

Independent congressional candidacy of Jefferson's James P. Mason will effect Broun, Saxon, Fleming (photo of Barry and hometown museum sign on I-20)

Image
Tire store marketing employee James P. Mason of Jefferson intends to enter his name on the ballot of the 10th district U.S. Congressional election here in Athens (and Augusta and north to the border), and I think his long shot independent candidacy will have equal effect on the Republican or Democratic candidates. I salute the former Marine who served his country in Afghanistan who has taken on the established parties. We shall see how effectively young Mr. Mason markets himself in the rather disjointed district stretching from the Central Savannah River Area to the Mountains of North Carolina with a dip in Watkinsville and Washington-Wilkes. Only one thing is for certain, Nicholson resident Bobby Saxon should have talked to his fellow Jackson County veteran in Mason and figured out why (or at least what is prompting him) he is going to run. Conventional political wisdom would prescribe that the Mason wild card will siphon off some votes from both sides of the aisle, but probably hur...
