Karen Handel embraces Oconee County

Former Georgia Secretary of State and Fulton County Chair Karen Handel brought her Republican run off campaign for Governor to a crowd of about 60 people in the upstairs courtroom of the Oconee County Courthouse in Watkinsville Thursday evening. Handel was introduced by Oconee County chair G. Melvin Davis.

Davis detailed his working with Handel while she was chair of Fulton County Board of Commissioners in 2003. Handel thanked Davis and recognized various members of the audience as well.

The Oconee Reigonal Republican Women hosted the event and local party chair Jay Hanley made some announcements prior to the main event.

Among the more surprising attendees at this event were Oconee County Tourism Director Peggy Holcomb, who (formerly?) was a Democratic party devotee, and Western Circuit Judge David Sweat.  Some of the more predictable attendees included the Republican nominee for the 113th House seat in Hank Huckabee, Oconee County Board of Education member Kim Argo and Bishop city council member Nedra Johnson as well as two term 46th district State Senator Bill Cowsert.

Among other things from her stump speech, the Washington, DC born Handel addressed her writing a check to the Log Cabin Republicans and took questions from the audience.  She spoke passionately about wanting to make government small and how she has been a conservative all her life. While never mentioning her opponent by name, she did make inferences of former Democratic Congressman's convenient conversion to the Republican side of life as being politically expedient.

Watkinsville City Council member Samantha Purcell attended and wanted to ask her a question about teachers, but could not last as long as the event continued. Handel repeated her Christian values, and she allowed that abortion should be allowed in the case of rape and incest.

I think she misspoke when she said illegal aliens should be the only ones allowed to vote (probably meaning to say legal aliens).

Handel claimed to have been underestimated her entire life and detailed how she wanted to have a family and left an abusive family situation at age 17 to work her way up to the Bush-Quayle White House, where she worked for Vice President Qualye's wife Marilyn to promote breast cancer awareness.

She parked her big coach on Main Street in Watkinsville after appearing at the arches in Athens. Tomorrow her opponent Nathan Deal will make an appearance in Watkinsville.
