Candidate Forums
From Lee Becker and Friends of Barber Creek:
Dear Friends,
Friends of Barber Creek is one of the sponsors of the Candidate Forums scheduled for 7-10 p.m. on Monday (June 2) and Wednesday (June 4) at the Oconee County Library on Experiment Station Road in Watkinsville. Please plan to attend and bring along your friends and neighbors. If you also can bring a plate of sweets and drinks to share, please do that as well.
The two candidates for Chair of the Board of Commissioners will lead off the program on Monday, followed by the three candidates for Coroner and the eight candidates for the four posts on the Board of Commissioners.
On Wednesday, the 11 candidates for the Board of Education will be featured.
At both Forums, citizens will have a chance to ask questions of the candidates. I'll moderate the first half of the first session; Russ Page will moderate the second half of the first session. Charlie Baugh will moderate the Wednesday session. As moderators, we'll do our best to make sure all those with questions get a chance to ask them.
We have commitments from all 24 of the candidates to attend or send a representative. Please help us make sure they have a room filled with people with good questions.
Friends of Barber Creek has achieved two of its three goals--a design for the proposed Rocky Branch sewage plant that will produce effluent of a very high quality and restrictions on the release of water to Barber Creek during flooding--because three members of the Board of Commissioners (Hale, Horton and Luke) provided crucial support. Our third goal is establishment of a system of independent, citizen monitoring of plant operations. We'll need a supportive Commission to make that happen as well, and none of the candidates has made a commitment to us at this point.
Come prepared to ask for that support and to pose other questions of concern to you.
I look forward to seeing you on Monday and Wednesday.
Lee
P.S. Remember that all the local action for the July 15 primary is within the Republican primary and that the primary is open to voters who have used the Democratic ballot in the past as well as those who used the Republican ballot in the past. We do NOT register by party in Georgia, and we can vote in whatever primary interests us. Please vote in the Republican primary on July 15. If you are going to be away from home, make plans now for an absentee ballot or advance voting.
Lee Becker
