HOW ABOUT A TOWN SLOGAN AND LOGO?
North High Shoals doesn't have a slogan, although nearby communities do. Watkinsville calls itself "The Artland of Georgia"; Bogart uses "Believe in Bogart"; Good Hope wants to attract bicycle riders, so it goes with"Happy to Share Our Roads". Bostwick's is "Home of the Cotton Gin Festival."  Then there's "Bishop – Don't Blink"(okay, we made that one up.) Even Oconee County has one: "A Great Place to Live, Work, and Play." That's a little wordy for a t-shirt, a hat, or letterhead.

Let's see what you folks can do. Nobody's calling this a contest because it's not like you'll win anything other than bragging rights. But please, send us your suggestions, and if we get enough we'll submit them to Town Council.

Here's a few that have been suggested, but you're not limited to this format:

North High Shoals – Live and Let Live
North High Shoals – Where Everybody's Welcome
North High Shoals – A Great Place to Live

Now about that logo. Something that can go on the website and letterhead, maybe some t-shirts and hats. This is a wonderful town, it would be nice to brag about it a little more. Send your submissions to The Messenger or anyone on Council.

DOG TETHERING ORDINANCE UNDER REVIEW

Regular readers will remember that we've had problems here with people tying up their dogs in an inhumane and less than neighborly way. The problems have been fixed for now, and Council is considering a slight amendment to our dog tethering ordinance. While people can still tie up their dogs, if the amendment passes they'll need to be out there with them. Please be sure to share your thoughts with us, or anyone on Council.

HILLSBORO ROAD SPEED BUMP/TABLE UPDATE

We've written so many times that this was about to get done, but we don't have much progress to report. There is this: At the Town Council meeting last Monday, the ordinance lowering the speed limit was passed. Once the new speed limit signs are in place, Council will then be free to install bumps and tables.

But here's the thing: most of those present at that meeting expressed second thoughts about the bumps and tables. The concerns were that they are loud and ugly, points well-taken. Additionally, the scientific data on speed bumps and tables seems to suggest that we may not get much bang for our buck.

Councilman Steve Holzman has volunteered to do everything he can to get a qualified engineer to look at the road, read the speed data, and tell us what kind of speed reduction we can expect with speed bumps or tables. That's not an easy task, and he's only given himself 60 days to do it. Even the most impatient among us will have to reluctantly admit that there's no point throwing money at Hillsboro Road until we know what we'll get for it.
