Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide Up for discussion

Sometimes a book discussion goes well beyond the sphere of influence of our county and onto that of the rest of the world. This is one of those profound moments.

Subject: [oconee] Up for discussion

This month the book group sponsored by the Oconee Democrats is reading a
book that Carolyn See of The Washington Post describes this way:
"Exquisitely crafted prose and sensationally interesting material . . .
I really do think this is one of the most important books I have ever
reviewed."

The book is "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women
Worldwide." It's written by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. I
remember amazing columns Kristof wrote for The New York Times that
described what happened when he bought two women to free them from
brothels in Asia. Those stories are recounted in the book, too.

There's now a companion PBS series -- and mobile and facebook games.

The author of "The Kite Runner" describes the book as "an unexpectedly
uplifting read." Copies are available at Books Galore in Watkinsville.

We'll discuss the book on Wednesday, March 27th, at the Tlaloc
restaurant in the Bell's shopping center in Watkinsville. Some of us
arrive at 6:30 to chat and order dinner; the book discussion gets
underway right at 7 PM. Newcomers are always welcomed.

Join us sometime!
