ATHENS, GEORGIA -- Russell Edwards, a Democrat, is set to qualify Monday for election to the 10th District seat occupied by Congressman Paul Broun, Jr. (R-GA). Mr. Edwards is scheduled to travel from Athens early Monday afternoon to the State Capitol Building in Atlanta and complete qualifying requirements.
Mr. Edwards has scheduled a brief news conference at 2:30pm in the North Wing of the State Capitol Building (Second Floor). Edwards will discuss the need for a non-partisan focus on jobs and education in Northeast Georgia as opposed to Congressman Broun's personal focus on espousing highly partisan political rhetoric from his bully pulpit in Washington D.C. Edwards will address ways to strengthen small businesses and save teachers' jobs in the 10th District.
Earlier this month, about 150 people gathered at City Hall in downtown Athens to hear Mr. Edwards formally announce his candidacy for Congress. Edwards decided to run for Congress based on his conviction that voters in Georgia's 10th District need a strong and effective Congressional representative working for them in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Neal Priest, an emergency physician in Athens, was among the people assembled to hear Mr. Edwards' announcement. "Paul Broun Jr. has been an embarrassment to Georgia and to my profession", Priest said. "Edwards is smart, works hard and best of all- isn't an ideologue."
Mr. Edwards was born and raised in Georgia. Edwards is a former public school teacher and business manager. He lives in Athens and graduates this spring from the University of Georgia School of Law. Monday is his last day of classes.
