More surgery planned for EMT injured in Oconee County ambulance wreck

An EMT severely injured Saturday when her ambulance wrecked while
responding to a call in Oconee County is expected to undergo another
round of surgery today.

Kayla Smith had surgery to repair extensive leg and arm injuries
following the wreck and more surgery is scheduled, according to Don
Cargile, community relations director for National EMS.

Smith was a passenger in the ambulance at the time it was struck by another vehicle on U.S. Highway 441 near Highway 186.

The ambulance overturned and after a long extraction operation by
rescue personnel she was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center.

The driver of the ambulance was treated and released, Cargile said.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the ambulance was not believed to have been charged, according to Cargile.

He said the wreck was being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol and a report should be released today.

Cargile called it the worst accident involving a National EMS ambulance since the emergency service started in 1976.

Smith is a single mother with three young children.

She is expected to be out of work for six to nine months as she recovers.
