Business Bureau Studies Cover Entire Southeast

By Dan Matthews, Sr. Friday, November 2, 1951

Although occupying ouly one small room in the Commerce-Journalism Building, the bureau of business research is carrying on a program of study projects which cover the entire southeast.

The bureau, founded in 1928 by Dr. R. P. Brooks, is headed by Dr. J. Whitney Bunting, newcomer to the University this fall after a year at the Atlanta division. With seven regular assistants, he supervises the
far-flung operations of the pint-sized organization.

Besides compiling and analyzing statistics on various types of business from over the state, the group publishes two monthly bulletins. The most important, with a circulation of 3,000 is Georgia Business, a public
service monthly devoted to comment on the economic situation. This magazine features charts, government
comment and staff articles each issue.

The other publication is a single-page bulletin sent to all interested persons; it lists retail sales with comparative trends each month.

This last publication ties in with one of the bureau's best known efforts, a study of all the retail sales within the state. This is made in conjunction with the Bureau of Census,Washington, D. C.

One of the seven units in the country selected tor this project, the bureau compiles reports from five
to six hundred Georgia retail merchants each month. Results are tabulated and the analysis mailed ou
through the bulletin and to the Census Bureau.

Dr. Bunting said that his job includes selection of new projects for the bureau as well as pursuing the
ones already sponsored. Among projects being prepared for research this year are "Tourist and Travel
Reports," "The Georgia Shellfish Industry," "A Real Estate Closing Cos
Survey," "An Industrial History o
the State,"
Gainesville',"
Transportation System," and others
The projects are usually sponsor
ed by government bureaus or Inter
ested private industry, and are
handled by the staff and graduate
students In commerce.
