Tony Howard, Elmer Buddy Christian honored as employees of the quarter by A/CC Police

EMPLOYEES OF THE QUARTER HONORED   Chief Joseph H. Lumpkin, Sr., announces the Police Department's employees of the first quarter (January-February-March) 2011 who were recently honored with a reception at police headquarters. Two sworn employees were honored. While growing up in Athens, SPO Tony Howard knew from a young age he wanted to help people. Later on, he made the decision to join law enforcement in the community he loved. His desires led him to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department where he became a model for Community Oriented Policing. His love for his fellow officers inspired him to join the Honor Guard, a unit dedicated to paying homage to our fallen brethren as well as other formal duties. On March 22, 2011, he was feloniously assaulted while trying to apprehend a fleeing fugitive. Though he was seriously wounded, his dedication to this department and community remains unwaivered.

Also, the late SPO Elmer B. "Buddy" Christian, III, was posthumously honored as Sworn Employee of the Quarter. SPO Christian began his career with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department on December 30, 2002, reaching his dream of becoming a police officer. He served the community for almost nine years, attaining the rank of Senior Police Officer. He was a member of the Honor Guard whose duty, in part, is to honor fallen officers. Buddy was always a friend to his fellow officers and the people of the community he served. He was a Christian dedicated to his church and family. On March 22, 2011, he made the ultimate sacrifice. Words can never express the hurt we feel or replace the hollow place in our hearts. "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God." Matthew 5:9   ###
    Sincerely,

    Dan J. Matthews, Jr.
