Paddle Georgia trek on Chattahoochee attracts Oconee paddler Becky Parker

Several local residents will participate in the Georgia River
Network’s Paddle Georgia trip on the Chattahoochee River that begins
today.

Putting canoes and kayaks in the river include Athens residents
Daniel Peiken, Colin Ackerson, Sara Beresford, Daniela Di Iorio, Eleanor
Mathews, Steve Moorman, Jonas Barnes, Casey Barnes and Kevin Barnes,
along with Watkinsville resident Becky Styles Parker.

The 110-mile trip, which begins in Cumming and ends in Franklin next
Friday, is an annual canoe and kayak trip that attracts up to 400 people
each year.

The trip introduces citizens to the river and raises money to protect the state’s waterways.

Paddle Georgia, which is in its 10th year, organizes trips on several
rivers including the Flint, Broad-Savannah rivers, Oconee and Altamaha.

“Last year, the event sold out in less than 24 hours,” River Network
Executive Director April Ingle said. “The response has been
overwhelming. After 10 years, it has become a trip that people mark on
their calendars and look forward to all year.”

The participants will travel the river through metro Atlanta south to its more rural surroundings.

The event includes educational programs on the river’s cultural and
natural history, tours of facilities and historic sites located along
the river, nightly games and entertainment, and even a research program
in which participants will help collect chemical and biological data to
give a snapshot of the current health of the river.

Daily paddle trips will average about 16 miles, and each night
participants will camp at nearby facilities such as schools and parks.
