Local choices in development and Democratic politics

Slowly but surely the Creekside development of the cross section of Oconee, Oglethorpe and Clarke county in the Old Barnett (Shoals) Estates area inches forward, with cameras, traffic counters, surveying, et cetera near the old country club called Green Acres. Bill Paul and some supporters spoke with the Athens Banner-Herald reporter. The area in question is one of the last quaint quarters of the county, with even a few mailing addresses of that area of Oconee County called Arnoldsville. Paul's properties are on both sides of the county line for Clarke and Oconee if memory serves me correctly. He has done an amazing job restoring some old structures and an even better job organizing opposition to the proposed development.

Meanwhile the Oconee County Democratic Committee continues to chug along almost unnoticed in their regular monthly meetings in the mainstream media of the three local newspapers. I suppose I can take discredit for that slip-up. I need to let them all know the next meeting is Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

The Oconee Leader at least had one of their conservative water carrier columnists in attendance there in Oconee County coronor candidate Bill Mayberry of the local GOP, who seemed very excited to see our treasurer Violet Dawe for some reason. In the interest of full disclosure, the free weekly newspaper was carrying my columns for a while but no longer seem too interested in my point of view or letting people know about our monthly meetings.

The Dems spent half an hour discussing how to kick off members for not showing up to meetings, and talked about various ways of raising their profile including the Adopt A Road program picking up 1.1 mile worth of trash along both sides the Oconee Connector from Highway 316 to Brookwood Drive. They found parts dentures, washed away silt fences, a functioning credit card, 10,000 cigarette butts, and seven large bags of trash and plenty more recycling material. They will do that again in September early on the Saturday morning. I think it was September 8th but I will check again later on that date for you.

They might have another bike ride, yard sale during the fall festival. They also have a book club meeting at night at Krimson Kafe in downtown Watkinsville and may also be hosting a dinner and Bar-B-Que. The Blue Hats will meet July 14.

Becky Vaughn moved any explanation of the dismal election results to the end of the meeting and I had to bike home with sunlight somewhat still available and almost got hit twice anyway going across Whitehall/Simonton Bridge Road.
