Neal Priest, M.D.: U.S. health care isn't working || OnlineAthens.com

Once again another thought provoking and provocative letter to the Editor from Neal Priest, who works in the Emergency Room of St. Mary's Hospital. I wish he would run for Congress against Paul Broun.

Pull The Plug (non) Event/January Meeting for Oconee Democratic committee

It would seem that the Pull the Plug people should concentrate on getting a candidate to back or to help before working on just the message of Paul Broun in bad. I think the message is one we all agree on, but we need leadership.

Woven brightly,

Subject: [oconee] Pull The Plug Event/January Meeting

Dear Dems:

I hope that everyone had a happy holiday season. As many of you know, we have been considering whether or not to have a town hall meeting in Oconee County hosted by the Oconee County Democrats but sponsored by Pull The Plug. The issue would be either health care or climate change.

After much deliberation, it's the consensus opinion of the committee that we aren't going to host a town hall event. Our concerns are: 1) A climate change town hall wouldn't get much turnout in Oconee County; 2) People are sick (no pun intended) of the health care debate, and there's no final bill to discuss; 3) The economy is really where people are focusing their attention, and their doesn't seem to be much excitement on the part of Pull The Plug for a town hall on that issue.

We feel that all of our efforts should be pointed towards finding a candidate. Once we find someone, we can put our shoulder to the wheel in any and every way possible for that hypothetical candidate, but until then, we are content to put out efforts elsewhere.

A reminder that our monthly meeting will be January 21st at 7 pm in at the Government Annex on 53 past Jittery Joe's. Our special guest will be John Beasley. John is an employment attorney and Watkinsville resident, who has been working with Water-Life-Hope to bring safe drinking water to Haiti. He recently made a trip to Haiti to follow up on some of the well-building projects, and he will report to us about that trip. You can learn more here: http://www.waterlifehope.blogspot.com/

Thanks!

Jonathan Veit

Oconee County remains most prosperous in the State of Georgia

How long we maintain this ranking is another matter all together, but thank goodness the economic bubble bursting has not had a worse effect around here other than it has. People are still getting new roofs and bicycles in Watkinsville.

I use to work for Jeff Wallace when he received his first team National Championship (and second trophy for this) back in 1994. I am fairly certain he lived or lives in Oconee County as I have seen him at the Taco Stand at Butler's Crossing and seem to think his son attended school out here.

Community-wide book group/ New slate of books

Oconee Democrats have an outstanding book club and here are some selections for 2010

-
Subject: Community-wide book group/ New slate of books

Hello!

Happy New Year!

We've put together an interesting line-up of books for our community-wide book group, which continues to grow each month!

Here's information about our choices below.

Thank you!

Patricia J. Priest
Member, Oconee Democrats

----------------------------------------------------------------

The community book group sponsored by the Oconee Democrats has announced
its slate of books for 2010.

The list includes classics such as "Catch 22" and "Frankenstein" alongside newer books such as "Hot, Flat and Crowded," the best-selling
book by Thomas Friedman about the global energy and climate crises.

Other choices celebrate the splendors of and threats to the natural
world.  Aldo Leopold's beloved classic "Sand County Almanac" and Paul Hawken's "The Ecology of Commerce" will inspire readers to look more closely at the wonders of nature in the winter-into-spring months and beyond.

The role of ordinary people to affect change is a theme across several
books.  The group will read historian Howard Zinn's classic "The People's History" over two months.  The book is an influential history of the courageous men and women who have worked to free slaves, improve the lives of factory workers, and achieve women's suffrage -- rallying in myriad ways to address injustices around the nation and world.

Another choice is "There is No Me Without You," a stirring and award-winning book by Atlanta writer Melissa Fay Green about a
middle-class woman in Ethiopia who provides foster care for some of the
1.5 million children in Ethiopia who have been left orphaned by the catastrophe of the AIDS epidemic.

An international focus pops up in several choices; these include the
critically acclaimed "Engaging the Muslim World" by Juan Cole and "The Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism" by retired Army colonel and self-described conservative Andrew Bacevich.  Publishers Weekly described the latter book this way: "Crisp prose, sweeping historical analysis and searing observations on the roots of American decadence elevate this book from mere scolding to an urgent call for rational thinking and measured action, for citizens to wise up and put their house in order."

The schedule is provided below.

The group meets at 6 PM the last Wednesday of every month at Five Points
Deli on Epps Bridge Parkway.  Many attendees order dinner (in part, to
help support the wonderful, locally owned deli in Oconee County); others get coffee.  The conversation about the book gets underway around 6:15 and ends about 7:45.

Books Galore in Watkinsville stocks copies of the books and provides a 25% discount.

Newcomers from any county and of any political affiliation are welcome.  For more information, contact Pat Priest (ppriest@charter.net).

Brian Kemp appointed Georgia secretary of state || OnlineAthens.com

Boom! just like that, Sonny fulfills one of my predictions from late 2009 when Karen Handel was first rumored to be exiting the Secretary of State's office. Now the Athens area developer can have a little on the job training for a very demanding j0b and win the Primary as an incumbent.

So will Cole continue to be Sonny Perdue's Secretary of State, or not?

Capitol Impact is suddenly saying no, but I have not found any independent confirmation yet  Erick and Icarus at Peach Pundit say it is not happening for Assistant Athletic Director Cole any more for Secretary of State.

Law enforcement "People of Color" pioneers from Oconee and Clarke counties honored

Just so anyone who reads this article will know, there is an appropriate use of the infamous "N-word" in the article demonstrating how far we have come in a relatively short time as a society (and how far we still have yet to go). Bethel Baptist is still the only church in Oconee County I have visited on repeated times for funerals, and they are to be commended for continuing this important honorary celebration honoring all people.
