Breaking News

Greeting Dan,
I wanted to share some exciting news with you. Our campaign reached our first benchmark in this race by raising $102,248.62 during our first fundraising quarter. This impressive amount largely exceeds expectations and proves the campaign's viability, especially since the incumbent's campaign holds more debt than cash on hand.

I'm so grateful to have such wide-spread and strong support from throughout the District and across the country. This report shows voters are responding to my campaign to send responsible leadership to Congress. Frankly, many in our District are suffering, and our incumbent refuses to help. Together we will send responsible leadership to Congress that supports our community. Together we will win this race! Thanks for supporting this campaign,
Russell

Hale v. Gilland for the Oconee County Board of Commissioners will be the most interesting contest on Primary Night - now less than a fortnight away. I predict the outcome will be less than 100 vote difference.

Campaign Event
Greetings Dan,

Russell Edwards here, and I wanted to invite to a mixer this Thursday.     What: Russell Edwards for Congress Mixer

When: This Thursday, July 8th, from 6-8pm
Where: Upstairs at the Downtown Transmetropolitan, 145 East Clayton Street, Athens, GA  View Map
Why: Come for a fun evening at Transmetropolitan Pizza where we'll join in fellowship and discuss our strategy moving forward.
This evening also presents a great opportunity for us all to get together and celebrate how far we've come in fighting to create jobs and supporting our schools and also understand how much farther we have to go.

I urge everyone to avoid Paul Broun, Jr.'s grandstanding and instead attend an event to send responsible leadership to Congress.  He hopes for people in our community to go and drive up attendance. He also hopes for people to angrily disagree with him and galvanize his base supporters.

Spread the word, let's get together and deny him these opportunities. The lower his turnout, the more illegitimate he appears.

There will be pizza at my event, not at his.  RSVP via Facebook here: click

Thanks for all your support thus far, and I hope to see everyone out this Thursday!
Russell

This Fourth of July

Friend --

The Fourth of July is especially dear to my family. For us, it is not just our nation's birthday. It is the day Michelle and I became parents 12 years ago. And every year we enjoy watching the fireworks with Malia on her birthday.

As we celebrate the profound pride of being American, today is a time to honor the women and men in our armed forces, whose immeasurable bravery and sacrifice have made our country what it is today.

That sacrifice is shared with husbands and wives, with sons and daughters, with fathers and mothers, who are asked to wait at home as their loved ones protect our nation. Their heroism, too, has helped pave the path of our freedom.

Even before we moved into the White House, Michelle was a champion for those military families. She has witnessed their struggles, and she has made it her personal mission to fight for them. On this Fourth of July, she recorded a personal message, commemorating our nation's birthday and paying tribute to these families.

Watch Michelle's message.

Please take a minute to watch Michelle's video -- and join us as we honor our military families here and abroad:

From all of us, happy Independence Day.

Thank you, and may God bless America.

President Barack Obama

Although admittedly I am quite biased because I send my son to Athens Academy, it is nice to see the school get a little bit of recognition after the school did not get a single person on the Banner-Herald's all area boys basketball team even at honorable mention this past season.

Incident report: Evans tried to bargain his way out of DUI arrest  | ajc.com

I am a huge Damon Evans supporter, but I cannot see him holding on to his job after the latest revelations in this article. I worked in the Athletic Association in 1994 when he cam from Graduate School at the University of Missouri. I thought he would be a great Athletic Director, and he was, but I do not see how he can hold on to his job now. The PR nightmare is only going to get worse when the videotape comes out next. Decisive action is called for, and swiftly.

On to the Senate

Organizing for America
Friend --

Last night, just before 7 p.m. Eastern Time, the House passed Wall Street reform by a vote of 237 to 192. This is a huge victory for our movement -- and all American consumers.

Now, there's just one hurdle left before this historic bill can be signed into law. It must be passed by the Senate -- a vote likely to come right after the July 4th congressional recess.

Protecting consumers and holding the big banks accountable is a key piece of the change that all of us fought for in 2008. It's up to us to bring it across the finish line -- making sure every champion in the Senate knows that we're standing with them, and that those in opposition know that Americans are demanding reform.

Can you take a moment now to write to your senators?

Thanks for making it possible,

Mitch

Oconee County Observations: Oconee County Republican Candidates Not All Pure Republicans, Voting History Shows

Republicans in Oconee County are in fashion, are trendy, and are the favorite brand of soap of most voters. It is as if the country club of choice if the G.O.P. in Oconee County, and the fact remains that the Republicans remain a 2-to-1 majority locally and it is damn near impossible for a Democrat to be elected locally in this day and age. Purity and adherence to some supposed orthodoxy are not a very good indicator of how genuine a candidate is in my humble opinion. In this day of teabagging, the Republican party's big tent has become smaller and more exclusive to relatively wealthy white people, while the Democratic party has rebounded in the once Republican strongholds of Cobb and Gwinnett counties in Georgia.

The fact that some candidates have voted for Democrats in the recent past should actually bring more votes to some candidates, but some local voters claim a purity test of how much a conservative Republican are they. A gauge of how meaningless party labels are would be the latest profile photo in Facebook of G.O.P. chair Jay Hanley shaking hands with Democratic politician Zell Miller at a recent fundraiser for Hank Huckaby. Now admittedly Miller has burned every bridge with Democratic hierarchy locally, statewide and nationally but remains a favorite of Republicans, but he refuses to change parties like almost every Republican in Oconee County has in the last several decades with the exception of Hanley (he's too young).

Local blogger extraordinaire Lee Becker does his usual thorough job of analyzing voting trends of most local candidates, and while I maintain that primary voting really does not indicate what a person does or does not believe, it does show how some folks say one thing and act another way. I have selected the G.O.P. primary ballot in almost every local election because I want my vote to go toward the local election since the Republican primary has become the defacto general election in Oconee for more than a dozen years. No one who knows me or reads this blog would accuse me of being a DINO (Democrat in Name Only) but it seems there is a whisper campaign about some candidates on the other side being RINOs (Republicans in Name Only).

I would think that a record of political campaign donations that candidates have made in the last dozen years might be a better gauge of where candidates come from, but I salute Becker for remaining a nonpartisan observer of both parties and someone who puts his money where his blog is.
