Subject: Candidate Forum Reminder

Dear Friends,

I can think of a number of reasons why citizens of the 113th House District should attend the candidate forum from 7-9 p.m. tomorrow night in the auditorium of the Oconee County Library on Experiment Station Road in Watkinsville. Here are a few:

1. This is a chance to see all four candidates and listen to each respond to the questions posed by citizens. If you haven't made up your mind about a candidate to support, this should help.
2. Regardless of who wins, the candidates need to know about the concerns of citizens. This is a chance for you to help them do that.
3. A strong democracy requires an active citizenry. You can help demonstrate the vitality of democracy in Oconee and the surrounding counties by attending.
4. Russ Page and I have asked each of the four candidates to give up an evening during a very short campaign period. We are going to be very embarrassed if the room is empty. You can help us avoid embarrassment.

Please do come to the forum and bring along family and neighbors.

Russ and I will be very appreciative of your attendance. I am certain the candidates will as well.

Thank you.

Lee

Reception honoring Judge Steve C. Jones on Sunday, June 5

(Athens, GA) – A community reception honoring Judge Steve C. Jones will take place on Sunday, June 5 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. in the Athena Ballroom of the Classic Center at 300 North Thomas Street. A ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m.

The reception will celebrate Judge Jones’ appointment to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia and thank him for his extensive community involvement over the years.

Judge Jones’ character and experience in the criminal justice system resulted in his nomination for judgeship to the United States District Court by President Barack Obama in November 2010. His nomination was confirmed by the United States Senate in February and his commission was received on March 3, 2011. The investiture ceremony was held in Atlanta on May 19, 2011.

Jones is an Athens native who graduated from Cedar Shoals High School and holds both a bachelor’s and a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Georgia. He served as the Director of the Child Support Recovery Unit and later as Assistant District Attorney for the Western Judicial Circuit of Georgia before becoming the first Athens-Clarke County Municipal Judge in 1992.

In 1995, Judge Jones was appointed by then-Governor Zell Miller to the third Judgeship of the Superior Court of the Western Judicial Circuit of Georgia. In this position, Judge Jones created and presided over the Western Judicial Circuit Felony Drug Court, which takes a non-traditional approach to working with criminal offenders who are addicted to drugs and/or alcohol.

Over the years, Judge Jones has also been involved with an extensive number of community and social organizations and recognized with a wide variety of honors and awards for his service and leadership.
