Update fromCitizens for Oconee's Future

Fresh off an appearance on Newsmaker Wednesday with Tim Bryant on NewsTalk 1340 WGAU AM comes this from Charlie Baugh:

Subject: Proposed Rezone Hwy. 441, Truck Stop

Good news! In the face of strong community and official opposition, the developer withdrew the proposed rezone. The withdrawal came at the last minute, 5:00PM yesterday. It will be at least 90 days before the proposal can be resubmitted. Citizens should remain watchful. The Regional Development Center had concluded the proposal was not in the best interest of the region or the state and the Oconee Planning Staff had recommended denial. This is the first time in the past 3 years that I have seen the RDC conclude a project was not in the best interest of the state or region.

I encourage citizens to pay close attention to what your County Government is doing, not only with rezones but especially with the ordinance updates that are in process. The stormwater ordinances continue to be reworked after the County requested an extended deadline from the state. The current deadline is June 30, 2006. A major rewrite of the county development code is under way. This process has the potential to improve the development regulations or to weaken them. You can be certain that development interests will influence this process. It is essential that those of us who must live with the results of the county government's development policies also influence that process.
