Perdue Campaign Manager Ticketed For DUI

ATLANTA -- Police and officials with Governor Perdue say the governor's campaign manager was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol Wednesday night. A police incident report says 24-year-old Nick Ayers was driving his Chevy Tahoe above the speed limit and had strayed out of his lane when he was spotted by a Georgia State Patrol trooper as he returned to Perdue's campaign headquarters in Buckhead just before 11 p.m. Wednesday.

The report says Ayers told authorities that he had, "consumed a strong Jack and Coke." Georgia state trooper J.W. Rickett reported that he could smell alcohol on Ayers breath. He wrote that Ayers almost struck another car as his SUV entered the parking lot. Ayers consented to a field sobriety test but refused to take a breathalyzer test, replying "NO sir" when asked to do so by the officer. He was booked into the Atlanta City jail. Perdue campaign spokesman Derrick Dickey says that Ayers arrest was considered "a personal matter."

Perdue's Democratic rival, Lieutenant Governor Mark Taylor, declined to comment on the incident. The Perdue camp provided The Associated Press with a copy of the Georgia State Patrol report after being asked about the incident.

It happens. Neither camp should pretend to have any monopoly on virtue. A little humility is always a silver lining for this sort of thing.

I'm glad Mark Taylor's campaign had the class to refrain from immediate comment. This probably won't be a very consequential development, anyway.

James Whipple of Bogart bonded out on child porn, pot, and possession of a firearm during commission of crime charges

Sheriff Scott Berry announces the arrest of Ian James Whipple (23) of Jefferson Avenue in Bogart on one count of Computer Pornography (child pornography), one count of Violation of Georgia Controlled Substances Act, and one count of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime. Bond was set by the court at $50,000. Whipple has bonded out of jail. The arrest st ems from an investigation that began when the OCSO received information from the Athens Clarke County Police leading to the obtaining of a search warrant for Whipple's residence and computers. That warrant was executed on July 1st. Upon entering the residence, it was discovered that Whipple also was cultivating marijuana plants. Whipple was not at the residence at the time the warrant was executed. He was arrested on July 3rd when he was located by OCSO deputies.
