Taco Stand finally officially coming to Oconee County

Regardless of how the Oconee County Board of Commissioners chooses to deal or not deal with beer and wine pouring in restaurants outside the municipality of Watkinsville, we will finally have a real Taco Stand at Butler's Crossing in early 2008. A lease was finally signed recently.

The Taco Stand is as beloved an Athens institution as any restaurant. This location will be packed with basketball and soccer families coming to and from various events at North Oconee, Oconee County, Athens Academy, Westminster and Prince Avenue Christian schools.

Good luck to co-owner Mark Marchant and the new Oconee County location of the Taco Stand opening maybe in mid-January 2008. Should be ready by Super Bowl Sunday - my 45th birthday - February 3 if all goes well with the build out (here's to hoping there are no problems or punch lists persisting past Christmas). Here is an excellent example of adaptive reuse that everyone can get behind. Glad to see that another choice for finer fast food for Oconee County consumers.

Now if we can only get a Tartar House out here. You listening or reading, Zach? Quit building subdivisions and stick to restaurants. I hope DePalma's relocates to inside Watkinsville, especially since the Board of Commissioners seem hellbent on not giving what 70% of residents want out here, and that is more dining choices.

We ate at Floyd's Grill with no one there at 8:00 pm last night after Lowell scored his third long rushing touchdown of the season in the nightcap of the Oconee County Recreation Department flag football game against the Vikings.

Having been a loyal customer to Figo Pasta for the past 3yrs, I can tell you that there were two creators of the restaurant chain. The other founder Sandro, is the heart and souce of passion for the atlanta based company. This cheap carbon copy is superficial at best. The food tastes the same because pathetically it almost is. It's the feeling, The passion and love for the people as well as the food and culture that cannot be replicated. When you enter a Figo, you feel welcomed, you feel at home, and you feel loved. Never do you feel served, or like you were luck to have the "waiter" slap food infront of you, and take your tip. I will always be loyal to FIGO! If you want to feel the difference, go visit one. Figo speaks for itself!

Jeff Dantzler's arrests may be the best thing that ever happened to him

THis has next to nothing to do with Oconee County with the possible exception of the location of his former office, but a former colleague of mine on the radio got popped today for four counts. Any one who has listened to 960 the Ref AM sports talk radio or heard the UGA Lady Dawgs or men's baseball team has surely heard the encyclopedic knowledge of one Jeff Dantzler. Jeff and I are pretty much diametrically opposed poltically, but today he was arrested on four counts including DUI. I hope he gets the help he needs following his incarceration. James Whipple of Bogart bonded out on child porn, pot, and possession of a firearm during commission of crime charges

The booking photo is not to be placed on any web page that charges a fee for booking photo removal. Sheriff Scott Berry announces the arrest of Ian James Whipple (23) of Jefferson Avenue in Bogart on one count of Computer Pornography (child pornography), one count of Violation of Georgia Controlled Substances Act, and one count of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime. Bond was set by the court at $50,000. Whipple has bonded out of jail. The arrest st ems from an investigation that began when the OCSO received information from the Athens Clarke County Police leading to the obtaining of a search warrant for Whipple's residence and computers. That warrant was executed on July 1st. Upon entering the residence, it was discovered that Whipple also was cultivating marijuana plants. Whipple was not at the residence at the time the warrant was executed. He was arrested on July 3rd when he was located by OCSO deputies.
