There's something rotten in the Courthouse....

None of the many mistakes made by Oconee County Board of Commissioners chair G. Melvin David by themselves rise to the level of an impeachable or criminal offense, but the continued pattern of subterfuge and ignorance of immediate county needs does point to a level of incompetence and boorish behavior which bodes poorly for Oconee County's future. I believe this necessitates a new level of leadership on the top elected officer level. Chairman Davis is a decent man, but I think we can do a whole lot better.

For those of you tired of reading the list of errors, I suggest you skip ahead a few paragraphs. But here is something I posted in the Athens Banner-Herald's new political page a few days ago:

10. Testifying on behalf of convicted felon Jim Ivey

9. Holding secret meetings illegally in Madison and other clandestine planning debacles

8. Not calling for a BOC vote on beer and wine in restaurants in Oconee County.

7. No public swimming facilities yet at new park despite a donation pledge of $10,000 if they built it first.

6. Trying to move the courthouse out of Watkinsville and general lack of cooperation with the county seat

5. Lack of sewer for non-businesses in Bogart

4. Lack of cooperation with Clarke County on the Orkin tract

3. Barber Creek, LAS, Bear Creek, who gets paid for their wells, etc.

2. No park around Elder Mill Covered Bridge or River walk around the Apalachee

1. Charlie Hoag

I could go into long explanation about any of these, but even the need for a skate park has been swept under the master plan carpet of the supposed comprehensive plans.

For more on Jim Ivey read the latest post by Athens Banner-Herald editor here but I have to post one particularly succinct passage here:

Let it be know, Jim Ivey is a crook, a scoundrel who, despite so many claims of a good man making a lone mistake, decided to enrich himself at the expense of others. No matter what spin pitched by his cronies, these are the undisputed facts of the case. Period. But instead of facing real time, time so many of us would certainly face in similar situations, he is a man who, despite stealing far more money than your average punk nabs from a convenience store, was slapped on the wrist because he could produce a collection of upstanding citizens to vouch for him. It’s a joke.

Watkinsville has been your county seat since 1875. What's the reasoning behind moving the courthouse?...and would that in turn then change your county seat?

The courthouse is a lovely building built in an art deco style from the 30s....in fact the courthouse was a WPA project that local teachers can and should point to when discussing Roosevelt's ABC government with students.
