Oconee political candidates - break free from your Republican $hackle$
I met a man named McGrath who pedaled up to my house the other day to ask for an Obama yard sign. The kids across the street had stolen my last sign (pulling it off the shelves of my carport while using my son's RipStick skateboard), but I gave him a bumper sticker instead.
I thought about writing some kind of stinging indictment of the neighborhood scalawags or perhaps the local leadership in either the government or political parties, but instead I will pass on this plea from local activists Pat Priest and Oconee County Democratic Committee chair Becky Vaughn to recruit candidates on their side of the political docket. There are many people in Oconee County who fit the bill and may not be aware of the need to file their candidacy at the end of April.
Ask yourself the following:
1. Are you tired of the way the government has been run in Oconee County?
2. Do you think you have time to commit to serving on a public governmental body such as the Board of Education, Board of Commissioners or other office?
Then run for office. We need fresh faces, bodies, minds and perspectives. You do not have to live in a certain subdivision or country club. You do not have to be a friend of Melvin Davis or Jim Ivey. You do not have to be caucasian, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant or Heterosexual. You can be a single parent or not a parent at all. You can be a church goer or not attend any house of worship. We just ask that you give it your all, your best effort, and not be or become a convicted felon.
We are the party of inclusion, not exclusion. You do not have to subscribe to a certain ideology, prescribed belief or have a litmus test of what you think is hip and acceptable. You can even be a former Republican or Independent, as many of the local G.O.P. were once Democrats a few years back.
IT IS O.K. TO BE A DEMOCRAT AGAIN IN OCONEE COUNTY, GEORGIA. We need you to run for office this year!
This part is urgent!

We are looking for capable people who are willing to run for office in
Oconee County. If you've been thinking about running or know someone
who should, please contact us to let us know. WE WILL HELP! This is a
great year to run, but the qualifying period ends MAY 2nd, and we MUST
act quickly to get great candidates in place.
And one more thing while I'm writing:
The Oconee Democrats are partnering with Clarke and Madison County
Democrats to staff a booth at Athfest in downtown Athens on Saturday,
June 21st. If you could volunteer for one or two hours, we would be
very grateful! We'll have information for the thousands of people
streaming by about Democratic candidates at the local, state, and
presidential level (if that still hasn't been decided!) and hope to
build the party in our area by networking with other Democrats.
Let's work together to help get good people in office! Our state and
nation -- and our worthy candidates -- need us!
Sincerely,
Pat Priest
