Wanted: MORE Democratic candidates for public office in Oconee County and the 10th District of Georgia
The Oconee County Democratic Committee met once again this evening, and it is basically the same set of folks lamenting our lack of candidates for the same set of offices time and time again.
Who would like to run against semi-permanently entrenched incumbents State Representative Bob Smith or Congressman Paul Broun? We will help you run, canvass, campaign and host events for your campaign. Many interesting names get tossed around at meetings such as these, and frustrations can sometimes bare fruit.
All the yard sales and Adopt-a-Road clean ups cannot create one candidate if the local churches still shun us like lepers, so the idea of a church tour (or garden tour or home tour or history tour) was discussed well into the night. The more outreach in to the actual community, the better for all concerned.
More than $1,000.00 was raised by some 16 people on both sides of the aisle during the successful Saturday Stroll series. Nearly than much again was raised during two soggy Saturday yard sale attempts at secretary Rita Bennett's house. $350 will be soon donated to the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia from proceeds raised at her house at Second and School Streets in Watkinsville proper.
Longtime Oconee County Democratic treasuer Violet Dawe is moving from Mayor Pro-Tem to acting Mayor of North High Shoals in the wake of the resignation of noted Robert E. Lee plagiarist Jeff Thomas. Congratulations to Violet (and Steve Holzman and David Lawrence and
Vice Chair Ann Stoneburner and her husband Robert Wyatt agreed to host the Oconee County Democratic committee dessert themed Christmas potluck Party at their lovely Lane Creek house on Apalachee Trace in greater Bishop, GA 7 pm Thursday, December 17th. Let us know if you all want to come and I am sure it will be fine, OK? We just want to make sure you are on the guest list.
Some of the more random and absurdist questions raised at this meeting - and any answers anyone could muster would be welcome - what is the origin of the Dark Corner section of Oconee County out on the other side of Highway 78? What would happen if we dressed in polar bear suits and danced in the Christmas parade before being splattered in street art style by would-be Congressman Brouns? What are the AmVets all about? Will people throw stuff at the North High Shoals City Council horse drawn carriage at Christmas parade? Do you know any one with fancy gardens in Oconee County that we could maybe make part of a tour? Can we get someone like Lisa Mende to run for office? Will we continue to work with Bethel Baptist Church?
For the answers to this and much more, please stay tuned to our Oconee County Democratic committee channel.
