Scenes from this year's Watkinsville Christmas Parade

I rode my semi-recumbent with neighbors Jimmy and Liz Marbut along with their son Seth and daughter Bailey and assorted Sunshine Cycles friends and cyclists - including uni-cyclists, trick riding BMX dudes and a couple of scooters and smaller kids. I think this was at least my fourth parade with my son participating in one way or the other. A little cold at first, but we survived. Thanks for coming to Watkinsville and please pick up all the candy.

I pedaled around the corner and down the street and saw lots of friends with dogs and children. It was a great time for all if not a little chilly. The sun came out and we were lucky to be number 25 in line.

Most of all the thanks go to all the volunteer firefighters and police who help bring in several thousand visitors in the smallest of citiies. How some of those floats made the corner on to First Street was beyond me.  Mayor Jim Luken was a very deserving Parade marshall in his last year at the helm in Watkinsville. I do hope he maintains an active role in area politics and policy. I believe he is going to continue to be on the Oconee County Development Authority.

I wish he would run for the Oconee County Board of Commissioners or against Bob Smith or Paul Broun. But I respect his decision to remain retired and close to his family.  I am glad Luken has served Watkinsville so well in his tenure. He came to power of some speed humps on his street and remained at the helm when no one was available.
