Do you have any gently used clothes, furniture, household goods, or toys?

I will come and pick them up, or you can drop them off at Rita Bennett's house on the corner of School and Second Streets in Watkinsville. Her house is across the street from the left field corner of Rocket field and near some of the cool street art of spinning wheels inside a colorful painting.

We need your help in donating your items that you are no longer using for a yard sale for the Oconee County Democratic Committe during the Oconee County Fall Festival October 17. You can call my house at 706-769-1131 and leave a message or just haul it on over to Rita's house at School Street. We need it soon and urge you to price it yourself, or at least suggest a price when dropping it off.

Rita's driveway is on Second, and I just spent a couple hours lobbing off vast chunks of privet, wisteria and crepe myrtles to try and make her yard just a little more presentable for the mass quantities of people presumed to be walking by for the Oconee County Fall Festival that same day. Usually the kids train embarks on its jolly journey right in front of her house.

You do not have to be a Democrat to donate to our yard sale. You do not have to live in Oconee County to donate or shop at our yard sale. You do not have to even be political to donate, shop or just tell a friend about our yard sale. We just want to keep items out of our landfills, and rest assured, anything not sold will be donated to one of a variety of second hand stores.

We need your help. We will be grateful. You will feel better about yourself for jettisoning the junk from your house or your dorm or apartment. Thank you very much for your consideration and assistance. We are an abundant and wealthy county, and we only want what you no longer use or need. We do not expect the sun and the moon, but there is not a single person who does not have something they can donate.  So please, empty out your closets and attics, get rid of those all dishes in the pantry, send us your old shoes and coats and blankets. We will not say no to anything you choose to leave us with for our yard sale. Please hurry up and clean out your stuff for us to come fetch or for you to deliver.

My good friend Geoff Seila will show what he has learned from a lifetime in Oconee when he leads a Saturday Stroll around Watkinsville Saturday. He use to do this in Athens for their Historical Society, so it should be interesting as well as informative. I will be there for this one as there is no soccer practice this Saturday morning. Georgia Congressman Calls Obama Marxist

Here is the Associated Press take on our esteemed Congressman and his paranoid ranting

McKillip to NOT run against Isaakson for US Senate

I hope Athens area attorney and Democratic State Representative Doug McKillip is going to run against Johnny Isaakson for the US Senate, but he is going to have to raise a ton of money fast. I know he is having a fundraiser at his office October 6th, so now I might have to actually give some money!

Oops, what started as a joke between Mary Jackson Byers McKillip and Athens Banner-Herald's writer Blake Aued nearly tumbled into a Draft Doug McKillip campaign You can still go by his office Tuesday at 5 to donate.

North Oconee HS varsity cheerleading 10 3 09

Remember the Titans. I support cheerleading as a competition sport but am certainly uncertain as to how one might grade or critique the competition. I am sure it is somewhat akin to rhythmic gymnastics or synchronized swimming as far as unanimity and fluidity of motion. This moment of non-political discussion was brought to you by a very proud mother.

Once again the comments section of the Athens Banner-Herald article continues to be a source of more information than the article itself. I do not know the author of the story, and he wrote a good ephemeral article about ambulance service in Oconee County, but I hope he continues to learn from some of his critics after the fact. Pull the Plug is the name of the Political Action Committee designed to defeat Paul Broun. As of now there is only one candidate who they can work for against the 10th District Congressman, but at least it is someone. Are any Democrats going to announce against him ever?

Paul Broun Tells A Man With Major Depressive Disorder To Go To The Emergency Room

Representative Paul Broun diagnoses a depressive person to go to the emergency room

Toby Smith comes to office in Watkinsville with an open mind

I wrote the following questionnaire to probable new Watkinsville City Council (barring an unforeseen write-in candidacy) member Toby Smith to try and get some feeling from where he is coming from. To his credit, he responded quickly on an otherwise busy Thursday afternoon.

My memory is somewhat sweaty and cloudy of Toby being a steady (if unspectacular) lanky basketball player from the Herman C. Michael hoops days of 1989 - 94, but I did mute a certain apprehension based on the fact that I had never seen him at any Watkinsville City Council meetings before.

I have not attended every Watkinsville City Council meeting in the last five years, but I would reckon I have witnessed about 70% of them in the last half decade. There is not a true numbered correlation with the answers to the questions, but wanted to leave the numeration on to see how Toby received them.

1. Do you intend to try to reverse any of the actions of the recent council's decision in regards to beer and wine?

2. Are you in favor of a new courthouse in Watkinsville?

3. What are your intentions for the City of Watkinsville as far as improvements?

4. How many Watkinsville City Council meetings have you been to before, and why were you there?

5. How does having two members who live in Christian Lake subdivision alter or change the new Watkinsville City Council?

6. How does your professional experience as an accountant improve your outlook on the city matters?

7. Who do you know previously on the current city council, and have you worked with them in the past in any way?

The following is from Toby:

Dan,

I’ll try to address as many of these as possible. Let me start off by saying, before I attemepted do anything regarding these issues I would make sure I had a clear understanding of the pro’s and con’s of each. While I have initial thoughts about all the items you have listed, I would want to be fully informed before I commented.

My family attends church regularly on Wednesday nights and I travel with work a decent amount of time, which obviously conflicts with the City Council Meetings. That being said, I have not yet attended a council meeting but look forward to doing so and working hard on behalf of the city. I do follow things very closely and read the minutes of the meetings. I also follow several of the Watkinsville blogs and enjoy hearing peoples opinions and thoughts that I may have not been aware of.

One thing having two members of Christian Lake could potentially offer is some exposure to issues a decent size neighborhood faces as opposed to stand alone homes, etc. However, I believe individual’s particular skill sets and background will have more impact on the efficacy of the council, then where they reside. I also don’t view myself as a representative of just Christian Lake on the council and would approach how issues affect all of Watkinsville, not just my neighborhood.

I think my financial background will be of benefit, especially when we start to approach the SPLOST funds Watkinsivlle will be receiving. Matching the actual cash flow of these funds with the execution of the expenditures will be critical, as well as other financial areas. I have a lot of respect for the hard work the current council members have put in. I want to concentrate first on learning quickly about the works in progress, logistics, and where and how I can contribute.

Brian Brodrick and are were in high school at the same time, although he graduated a year before me. Our kids also go to Colham Ferry. However, outside of that I have no professional or personal relationships with any one on the city council.

Toby

I think the term "aggressive" needs to be included in any statute (or at least some kind of language describing the approach) and restrictions placed on people who operate at intersections.Roadside charity regs still debated in Oconee | News | OnlineAthens.com
