Pull the Plug 1st Regional Forum Tomorrow

Interesting group with high ideals and goals, but we still need a viable candidate to oppose Dr. Broun.

GA-7 Health Policy Forum Media Information

Where:   Barrow County Leisure Services Center, Room 125
Address: 175 Second Street, Winder, Georgia 30680-2499
When:     Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 7pm

GA-7 health policy forum is free and the public is welcome, regardless of political views or party affiliation. Georgia's 7th Congressional District residents from Barrow, Gwinnet, Forsyth, Newton and Walton Counties are invited guests. Residents of neighboring counties outside of GA-7- including Clarke, Hall, Oconee and Jackson counties- are encouraged to attend and participate in this regional forum.

With the recent American Community Survey published by the United States Census Bureau reporting an estimated 164,182 uninsured people under the age of 65 reside in Georgia's 7th Congressional district, the importance of a timely discussion on President Obama's health insurance reform initiative is established.

"The current legislation in Congress gives people who live in Barrow County - and the residents throughout the region - a chance to join the push for adequate health coverage," said Dwight Acey, spokesperson for the Barrow County Citizens Group, sponsors of the forum.

Given that 33,329 children and 2,391 seniors 65 and over are included in the staggering number of uninsured in GA-7, the humanitarian importance of regional cooperation among a diversity of people and political thought is very clear.

The American Community survey also reported 2,391 seniors 65 and over did not health insurance in GA-7, including 66 in Barrow County.

According to additional data put forth by the census department, Barrow County has from 11,504 to 13,824 uninsured people, including from 1,759 to 3,125 youth and children under the age of nineteen.

The Small Area Health Insurance Estimate (SAHIE) estimated 18.6% of the Barrow County population under 65 years of age and 15.0% of youth and children under 19 did not have any sort of health insurance.

The same report estimated 344,991 children that live in Georgia, or 12.9%, do not have public or private health insurance.

"Our county is desperately in need of affordable and available health care for its poorest residents," said Acey. "Health care should be a right and not a privilege limited to those of means."

The American Community Survey also reported 121,325 people that live in GA-10, the congressional district east of GA-7, were uninsured at the time of the survey, which was conducted in 2008. Of those uninsured in the district, 17,228 were children and 741 were seniors age 65 and over.

Moderator of event is Russell Edwards, a University of Georgia-Athens (UGA) law student and Pull the Plug PAC political organizer.

Forum panel includes: Teresa Duncan of Athens, GA, health insurance billing specialist; Dr. Fazal Khan, J.D., M.D., of Athens, GA, health policy analyst and professor at UGA law school; Dr. Neal Priest, M.D., Athens, GA, emergency room physician; others to be announced.
