Farley Jones announces as Candidate for ACC District 1 Commission for 2010

Meanwhile over in Athens, my friend and Winterville resident Farley Jones announces for District 1 Commissioner slot

Subject: announcement: Candidate for ACC District 1 Commission for 2010

Dear Friends and Family;
With considerable thought on the matter for several months, I have decided to run as a candidate for
Athens-Clarke County Commissioner,  District 1.  I want to tell you first - before it is announced in the papers, etc.
When you go to our web site:  www.FarleyJones.Info, please note on the Home Page, my explanation of having no Paypal or similar Contribution link.  It is short and to the point.  And for several reasons, not just the one.  As a dues paying member of Georgia Conservancy and Georgia Public Broadcasting, and other entities that I contribute to yearly, I understand it may be difficult to contribute beyond what one might in a given year - for personal or economic reasons.
No matter; I simply ask for your support in a way you are able.  Whether it is forwarding this email or your own version of it, contacting friends and family in District 1, volunteering your energy in any way, I deeply appreciate it.
Additionally, I want to thank my Support Team;  web site builder, Treasurer and Event Coordinator, for being willing and able and up to the task!
Please check back on the web site (events will also be announced via email) for news and upcoming Events.  One being a community pot-luck dinner (time/place TBD).  Other plans are in the works, and yes, naturally there will be music involved!
Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you, (please email FJonesForDist1@aol.com) if you have any questions -  Please consider signing up for email notification as well.  Please share this info and
thank you!

The Gulf Coast

Friend --

Yesterday, I visited Caminada Bay in Grand Isle, Louisiana -- one of the first places to feel the devastation wrought by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. While I was here, at Camerdelle's Live Bait shop, I met with a group of local residents and small business owners.

Folks like Floyd Lasseigne, a fourth-generation oyster fisherman. This is the time of year when he ordinarily earns a lot of his income. But his oyster bed has likely been destroyed by the spill.

Terry Vegas had a similar story. He quit the 8th grade to become a shrimper with his grandfather. Ever since, he's earned his living during shrimping season -- working long, grueling days so that he could earn enough money to support himself year-round. But today, the waters where he has worked are closed. And every day, as the spill worsens, he loses hope that he will be able to return to the life he built.

Here, this spill has not just damaged livelihoods. It has upended whole communities. And the fury people feel is not just about the money they have lost. It is about the wrenching recognition that this time their lives may never be the same.

These people work hard. They meet their responsibilities. But now because of a manmade catastrophe -- one that is not their fault and beyond their control -- their lives have been thrown into turmoil. It is brutally unfair. And what I told these men and women is that I will stand with the people of the Gulf Coast until they are again made whole.

That is why, from the beginning, we have worked to deploy every tool at our disposal to respond to this crisis. Today, there are more than 20,000 people working around the clock to contain and clean up this spill. I have authorized 17,500 National Guard troops to participate in the response. More than 1,900 vessels are aiding in the containment and cleanup effort. We have convened hundreds of top scientists and engineers from around the world. This is the largest response to an environmental disaster of this kind in the history of our country.

We have also ordered BP to pay economic injury claims, and this week, the federal government sent BP a preliminary bill for $69 million to pay back American taxpayers for some of the costs of the response so far. In addition, after an emergency safety review, we are putting in place aggressive new operating standards for offshore drilling. And I have appointed a bipartisan commission to look into the causes of this spill. If laws are inadequate, they will be changed. If oversight was lacking, it will be strengthened. And if laws were broken, those responsible will be brought to justice.

These are hard times in Louisiana and across the Gulf Coast, an area that has already seen more than its fair share of troubles. The people of this region have met this terrible catastrophe with seemingly boundless strength and character in defense of their way of life. What we owe them is a commitment by our nation to match the resilience they have shown. That is our mission. And it is one we will fulfill.

Thank you,

President Barack Obama

Georgia Right to Life picks a fight with Karen Handel | Political Insider

I often have to vote in the local Republican primary to have any influence on local elections, and obviously I then have to continue the vote all the way up the ticket. I think Karen Handel, despite all my differences with her, may help me make up my mind to fill in the blank for her.

Why is there no 7th grade basketball in Oconee County?

That was the single biggest question I was left with after attending the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce Political Forum hosted by Tim "Don't call me Anita" Bryant of NewsTalk 1340 WGAU AM.

Here Oconee County Board of Education members Mack Guest and Kim Argo basically dropped the bomb on Carter Strickland by refusing to endorse his candidacy for the appointment of the slot to fill the slot for the departed Tom Breedlove's slot on the BOE despite limiting the four candidates who could claim the seat. Now that a Democrat might actually make it, we can't have that in Oconee County where someone who supports the schools in a different manner than the guaranteed shenanigans of the Republican orthodoxy dare challenge the status quo.

Oh well, a little diversity never hurt anyone, especially Ms. Argo and Mr. Guest. But it looks like it is not going to be a fun time at the June 14th meeting, although Guest said it should be a very interesting meeting in their response to a question of whether they are going to support the appointment of Strickland to the Board to finish the unexpired term of Breedlove. Let us hope cooler minds prevail and someone else is given an opportunity to serve.   Below is a shot of Strickland with fellow Democrat in State House 113th district candidate Suzy Compere and last election's Oconee County Democratic candidate for the BOE in Rich Clark.

Looking forward to meeting Carter Strickland tonight

So will the Oconee County Board of Education appoint Carter Strickland - a Democratic candidate - to the open slot on June 14? We shall see. The conventional wisdom has been outdone by unconventional approaches, and I hope the BOE appoints Strickland June 14.

Friend, can we add your name?

Friend --

I wanted to make sure you saw the message from Mitch below. The House's vote on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is a huge moment -- for our movement and our country.

But this fight is just getting started.

The Senate will take up this issue soon, and there are Republicans pledging to block a vote from even taking place.

Polls show that 78 percent of the country agrees that it's time to end "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," but opponents of reform aren't getting the message. Can you sign on to help us show that Americans overwhelmingly support repeal?

From: Mitch Stewart, BarackObama.com
Subject: "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

Friend --

This is big news: Yesterday, the full House of Representatives and the Armed Services Committee in the Senate voted to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

In his State of the Union address, President Obama pledged to end the law that denies gays and lesbians the right to serve their country. Now, we are closer than ever to making good on that promise.

The full Senate will soon start its debate on repeal. But some Republicans are digging in their heels. Senator John McCain said, "I'll do everything in my power" to block a vote. And Mississippi Senator Roger Wicker called the repeal bill "a major mistake" -- announcing that the GOP plans to filibuster.

We can defeat those who'd stand in the way of history. But we must show our senators that Americans -- in every state -- overwhelmingly support repeal.

Stand with the President and join the pledge to end "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

Stand with the President: Repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.' Add your name.

From the Recovery Act to health reform to Wall Street reform, one by one President Obama is delivering on his campaign promises. And, now -- if we can overcome Republican obstruction -- we have a chance to deliver on another: bringing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" to an end.

As the President has said, this is about more than just living up to his word. We must end this law because "it's the right thing to do."

Any policy that punishes brave men and women who step forward to serve their country simply for being who they are isn't just misguided -- it's discrimination.

That's why President Obama didn't just campaign on ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"; he made it a priority. And it's why it's now a matter of how and when -- not if -- we will repeal this law.

But as the Republicans prepare to block a vote on this historic legislation, we must do all we can to help deliver on the President's promise.

Add your name to the pledge today -- and then please pass it on:

Thanks,

Mitch

The Great American Dawg Jump

It is very cool that the pooches are getting a pool at Oconee Veterans Park (no matter how temporary at the beginning of July), but would not it be much cooler if there was a permanent pool for people to use too at the park? Once upon a time, a mysterious benefactor offered to contribute $10,000.00 toward the building of a pool at the park, long before the first blade of dirt was turned in the park. The bureaucrats and politicians who control the Oconee County Parks and Recreation Department ultimately decided in their infinite wisdom to deny the residents of Oconee County a public swimming facility and turn down the generous benefactor's donation. Remember these are the people we elected that did this, and denied us a park at Elder Mill Covered Bridge.

Nonetheless, I think it is peachy keen that our animals are better treated then our children (at least when it comes to public water competitions), even though I suspect a large number of these soggy canine athletes are imports or carpetbaggers.
