easily manipulated like you-know-who.

Join us to talk about books and ideas! The last selection of the year
for the book group sponsored by the Oconee Democrats is "Engaging the Muslim World." See the press release below for details.

Community book group discussion
Sponsored by the Oconee Democrats

Book: "Engaging the Muslim World" by Juan Cole

When: December 1st at 6 PM
Where: Five Points Deli on Epps Bridge Parkway

The community book group sponsored by the Oconee Democrats will discuss
"Engaging the Muslim World" for its November book. The group normally
meets the last Wednesday of every month but has changed the date to
December 1st because of the Thanksgiving holiday.

The book, written by Middle East expert Juan Cole, addresses the harmful
anxiety that underpins the relationship between Middle East and West.
Cole points out the risks and missed opportunities linked to the
rising antipathy toward Muslims. For example, he notes that eleven of
the nineteen nations with the largest reserves of petroleum have
Muslim-majority populations.

Cole explains the book's title: "By 'engagement,' I do not mean
surrender or accommodation. I mean critique as well as dialogue,
pressure as well as basic human respect, sticks such as sanctions and
carrots such as better diplomatic and economic relations. I mean the
demotion of military response from favored tool to last resort. I do
not underestimate the challenge of radical Muslim Fundamentalism but
simply note that guerrilla wars have almost never been won by simple
force of arms."

Cole teaches history at the University of Michigan, where he is a
specialist in contemporary Muslim movements in the Middle East and South
Asia. He speaks Arabic, Persian, and Urdu fluently. He has a regular
column at salon.com about Middle East Affairs and appears regularly on
PBS's Lehrer News Hour. Cole also writes about events in the Middle
East and translates media from the region on his influential blog called
Informed Comment.

In "Engaging the Muslim World," Cole provides information about U.S.
involvement in the region that dates back further than most Americans
realize (for example, the Truman Administration's overthrow in 1949 of
the elected government in Syria and Eisenhower's deployment in 1958 of
14,000 Marines to Lebanon as a show of force).

While Americans and others around the world are rightfully appalled by
the horrific violence of September 11th and of grotesque acts of
terrorism by al-Qaeda and other Muslim terrorist groups, he mentions
actions by the U.S. government and the United Nations that have caused
hatred to fester in the Middle East (such as the estimated half-million
children who died in Iraq because of the sanctions in the 1990s).
These differently focused but interlocking histories are important to
understand, he argues, as we find our way forward through the global
challenges of terrorism, climate change, and so much more.

In addition to trenchant discussions of the situation in Iraq,
Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan, Cole writes about Wahhabism in Saudi
Arabia and the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. He takes up the subject of
Timothy McVeigh's bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building to show
that American society, too, has terrorists who are not supported by the
mainstream public that decries violence against innocents.

The thought-provoking "Engaging the Muslim World" is available at 25%
discount at Books Galore in Watkinsville.

The group will discuss the book at 6 PM on December 1st at Five Points
Deli on Epps Bridge Parkway (near the new Trader Joe's). Participants
of any political background and from any county are welcome. For more
information, contact Pat Priest (patricia.priest@yahoo.com).

Video: President Obama thanks you

Organizing for America
Friend --

The results of Tuesday's elections were disappointing for a lot of us. But because of the work you all did, we won some key races in places all over the country.

We have a lot to be proud of -- and a lot of work still left ahead.

The President recorded a message yesterday thanking you for all you've done.

Watch the message from President Obama

Take a moment to watch it:

Wow - I suspect this is just the first of a long series of the new GA. G.O.P. circling the wagons in reverse infighting that shall be on public display (sometimes). I reckon it pays to read Peach Pundit to know what is coming down, although Erick Erickson could not get Carol Porter or Roy Barnes elected all by himself.

Activism asked for by Oconee County Cycling Organization to Land Use and Transportation Committee Meeting Tuesday at Veterans Park

Hi everyone...we need some help from you. Next Tuesday, November 9th, at 7:00 PM in the community center at Oconee Veterans Park, Oconee County's Land Use and Transportation Committee (LUTC) is meeting on two critical cycling initiatives:

1. Northeast Georgia Rails to Trails
2. Share the Road signs for the county

We need as many of you and your friends as possible to attend this meeting. By so doing we will be exhibiting to the committee that our community is fully supportive of both of these initiatives. Further, we believe that a large group will help increase the chances that the LUTC will positively endorse these initiatives (which endorsement is then passed to the County Board of Commissioners for a final vote). A positive vote from the BoC will open the way for us to begin identifying specific roads to install Share the Road signage!

Thank you for your interest in helping enhance the cycling infrastructure of Oconee County.

Happy cycling,

Brett Haslam
President OCCO

If former Athens Tax Commissioner Nancy Denson wins the forthcoming Athens Mayoral run-off Tuesday, November 30, 2010, then Dave Hudgins should win the District 5 Commissioner race against AthFest founder Jared Bailey.

If Gwen O'Looney wins the Athens Mayoral run-off, then it will be a cakewalk for Jared Bailey against Hudgins.

Their battle over labels and names on the radio this morning demonstrates the challenges for both candidates in the next 24 days.

Urgent -- how many calls can you make right now?

Organizing for America
Friend --

It's Election Day, and we all need to call voters for 20 minutes.

We know there are millions of people across the country who might not cast their ballots -- unless they hear from someone like you. These people -- whether they vote or not -- will be the difference in the closest races.

That's why thousands of supporters are using our call tool after they vote today to make sure these folks get to the polls.

You can talk to these people right now. You can remind them of the importance of their voice in this election. You can tell them where their local polling place is -- and when it closes its doors.

It's all one click away. Start right now -- because "later" will be too late.

Can you take 20 minutes to call some of these voters in key districts?

This election will determine the direction our country takes over the next two years.

Once the polls close, we can only watch the results come in.

Those results are being determined right now. And we can do a whole lot more than just watch.

As long as the polls are still open, you can have a real impact on the races that will come down to the wire.

Join thousands of supporters just like you for the final push -- and pick up the phone now:

http://my.barackobama.com/E-DayCalls

Thanks -- now let's get to work,

Natalie

Let's Beat the Billionaires - Vote Straight Democratic

Woven brightly,

Subject: Let's Beat the Billionaires - Vote Straight Democratic
From: activist@democrats.com

Message body

Dear Dan,

A handful of powerful rightwing billionaires are trying to buy Congress. Who will stop them?
The Corporate Media won't. The most powerful man in Corporate Media - FOX chairman Rupert Murdoch (right) - is also the most powerful rightwing billionaire. First he turned FOX into 24x7x365 rightwing Republican propaganda. Then he hired the top Republicans like Karl Rove and Sarah Palin as "analysts." Then he used his hosts to raise millions for Republicans, both on-air and at their fundraisers. Then he gave millions directly to Republicans, both from his corporation and from his own pocket.

What about the rest of the Corporate Media? Last week ABC hired Andrew Breitbart - the video liar most infamous for the vicious Shirley Sherrod and ACORN smears - for Election Night coverage. Not one single "journalist" at ABC objected.

The only exceptions are NBC's evening hosts - especially Ed Schultz, Keith Olbermann, and Rachel Maddow - who are doing their best to sound the alarm. But their heroic efforts are undermined every morning by Joe Scarborough, the Republican ex-Congressman who single-handedly championed the anti-Kerry Swift Boat liars in 2004.
So if the Media won't stop the billionaires, who will?
Look in the mirror. It's up to us - only us - and every single one of us. And here's what we must do.
1. Vote a Straight Democratic Ticket
If you don't want rightwing billionaires to own our government, vote Democratic.
If you want billionaires and corporations to pay taxes, vote Democratic.
If you want a decent job with decent wages - not corporate slavery - vote Democratic.
If you want Social Security, Medicare, public education, and environmental protection to survive, vote Democratic.
If you don't want rightwing thugs to stomp on your head at a political rally, vote Democratic.
If you don't want a woman's body to become the property of the Republican Paty, vote Democratic.
If you want campaign finance reform that gets billionaires and corporations out of politics altogether, vote Democratic.
If you want Truth, Justice, and the American Way, don't wait for Superman - vote Democratic.
(If you want to know which Democratic candidates will fight hardest for us - and how to vote on complex ballot questions - read local Voter Guides created by progressive activists like you: http://theballot.org )

2. Persuade friends and relatives to vote Democratic

You've seen Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, and Joe Biden working their hearts out to keep Democrats in office. But did you know endorsements from family and friends are more persuasive than Presidents?
That's why we built a unique Facebook tool called VoteDem. With a few clicks, you can tell all your Facebook friends why you're voting Democratic and why they should too. BarackObama.com has a Commit to Vote Challenge. You can change your avatar to your top issue at VotingFor. Or you can add a Vote2010 twibbon to your regular avatar.
And you can write your own inspirational GOTV message and post it on your Facebook page or blog and email it to all your friends.

3. Call a few key undecided strangers
to vote Democratic
Democrats and progressives have become really good at finding undecided voters in key swing states so volunteers can call them and persuade them personally. Choose your favorite:
Rightwing billionaires will not be voting Democratic. But there are 300 million more of us than there are of them. So let's work hard for the next 24 hours and beat them!

Tomorrow

Friend --

Tomorrow, you can help determine not just the outcome of this election, but our country's future.

You made the difference in 2008. Now, once again, you can defy the conventional wisdom that says you can't overcome the cynicism of our politics; you can't overcome the special interests and the big money; you can't tackle our biggest challenges.

This movement has never backed down from a tough fight -- and we're not about to start.

Over the next two years, we've got to keep moving America forward -- but I need allies in office to make it happen. The ballot you cast in 2008 was a crucial first step. Thank you for that.

I need you to make sure you get at least three of your friends to vote with you -- it is simply the most important thing you can do to make sure we can keep bringing about change.

Find your polling place and the time polls are open here.

If you haven't yet voted, please think through how and when you will do so. When will you go to the polls? How will you get there?

If you have already voted, please click here to help in these final hours of our Vote 2010 campaign.

When we arrived in Washington, we knew the road ahead would be difficult.

Our country was facing the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression -- with 8 million jobs gone -- because of nearly a decade of policies that put corporations and special interests before ordinary Americans.

Two short years later -- together -- we have begun to rebuild our economy on the values of hard work and responsibility.

Private employers and small businesses have created jobs nine months in a row. And 3 million Americans would not be working today if not for the investments that you, and our Democratic allies in Congress, helped put in place.

Because of you, there are families all across the country who will never have to choose between losing their home and treating an illness. Because of you, millions of parents can look at their kids and know the opportunity of a college education is within reach. Because of you, a business owner got a small business loan and is keeping her doors open. And because of you, thousands of our brave men and women are home from fighting in Iraq.

I know that even with these changes -- and the progress you've fought for -- too many families are still struggling. We have so much more to do.

And that's exactly why America cannot afford to go back.

We must continue to move forward, and the decisions voters make in your area will determine which direction this country takes for generations.

We want to keep taxes low for the middle class, so you can pay your bills.

We want to give tax breaks to American companies who create jobs and spur innovation right here in America, not make it easier for them to ship jobs overseas.

We will fight efforts to privatize Social Security, and stop the other side from handing over the retirement savings of a generation to Wall Street.

We refuse to go back to the days when big oil and insurance companies wrote their own rules and ran up record profits, while you paid for it at the pump or faced bankruptcy as health bills piled up.

The other side has different ideas.

Washington Republicans have tried to block our progress at every turn. And worse, they're campaigning on taking us back to the exact same agenda that brought us to the brink of disaster: Cut taxes for the wealthy at the expense of the middle class while ballooning the deficit. Give free rein to Wall Street speculators. Lower the minimum wage for millions of hard-working families. Privatize Social Security. And allow insurance companies to deny children health coverage based on pre-existing conditions.

The problem is we know what this looks like -- and we know it doesn't work.

We cannot relive that past.

Don't let them tell you that change isn't possible. Because here's what I know: Nothing in America has ever been easy.

The only reason we're here is because, in past generations, Americans came together, even in the face of impossible odds. That's how we got through war. That's how we got through depression. That's why we have civil rights, and women's rights, and workers' rights.

We've asked you to do so much since we started this journey together, and you've always come through.

And now, I'm asking you to come together once more to cast your vote for Democrats tomorrow.

With your vote -- and the votes of at least three of your friends -- we'll continue to grow this economy and restore the middle class to its rightful place, and the American Dream will be alive and well once again.

Find your polling place and time here:

http://pollingplaces.RaiseYourVote.com

Thank you for all you do,

President Barack Obama

P.S. -- There are vital get-out-the-vote events happening across the country today and tomorrow. If you aren't already signed up to help, please find and RSVP for a GOTV event near you.

Here is yet another organized bike ride that I am pretty sure did not get approval by the Oconee County Board of Commissioners before embarking from Watkinsville - just saying that dozens of people bike daily all over Oconee and much more than the casual observer or government official (with the exception of one or two Brian) have no clue whatsoever about. I would love to be able to bike to Oconee Veterans Park without taking my life into my hands (and that of all the other drivers on the streets).
