Friends of OCCO,

Please see the message below regarding a benefit bicycle ride for ACCPD Officers Elmer "Buddy" Christian and Tony Howard.  Feel free to forward these details to others.  Lets get the word out.  Even if you aren't able to ride, please consider a donation.  Full details below and in the attached flier.

My thanks to Ken and the others for putting together this benefit.

Sincerely,
Tony Glenn

3/25
Dear AGB Friends:  During my 20+ years in Athens, in my various roles - middle school principal, university teacher, husband/parent/friend, cyclist - one of my greatest honors and privileges has been the friendship and loyalty of my buddies and colleagues on the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.  Like all of you, I was shocked and terribly saddened by the news of the shooting of two of Athens' Finest, Officers Elmer "Buddy" Christian and Tony Howard, and especially by the senseless and tragic death of Officer Christian.
In looking for ways to honor these officers, and to help support their families in this time of need, several of us have moved quickly to organize a fundraising/memorial bike ride - the Fallen Heroes Ride - to be held next Sunday, April 3rd, 1 p.m.  This is our small way of doing something to say thank you.
Please plan to join us on Sunday, April 3rd.  Here are the details, and please feel free to email or call me (shermankathens@gmail.com, 706-224-2526) if you have additional questions.
  • The Fallen Heroes Ride will leave from Jittery Joe's on Baxter Street, in the Kroger Shopping Center, at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 3rd.
  • Ride--day registration will begin at 12 noon on April 3rd.
  • There is a suggested donation of $25 per rider.  Please make out your checks to "Fallen Heroes Ride."
  • Print out the attached flyer, or pick up a hard copy at Jittery Joe's on Baxter Street.  Add your name and phone number/email address, and drop off the form along with your check at Jittery Joe's any time between now and the start of the ride next Sunday.
  • We will also be accepting additional donations, from riders and non-riders, now and on ride day.  (Bring your donations to Jittery Joe's on Baxter Street).
  • The basic bike ride is 40 miles with shorter options available.  Directions will be provided at the start.  The ride will go, rain or shine (unless conditions are prohibitive or unsafe).
  • We ask all riders to wear helmets.
  • Sandwiches, snacks, and drinks will be provided at the finish line.
  • If you would like to volunteer your time and energy (to staff a table, make sandwiches, collect funds, setup/clean up), please contact Heather McElroy at hjmcelroy@bellsouth.net.
  • We will also be posting the Fallen Heroes Ride flyer on the www.athensgabicycling.com web site and on the Nitty Gritty web site (www.cyclenittygritty.org), and we are asking our friends to post the flyer and share this info on their web sites and through their various listservs and Facebook pages.
Thank you all for your friendship and support.
