7 Oconee residents part of 15 applicants for Judge Jones old seat

15 attorneys apply for Superior Court seat

Fifteen men and women have submitted  their  name  to  Gov. Nathan Deal in hopes of being nominated  to  fill  the  vacant Superior Court judgeship in the Western Judicial Circuit.
Judge  Steve  Jones  resigned last month to accept an appointment to federal District Court in
Atlanta. Gov. Deal will appoint someone to fill out his term of office.
Of the 11 men and four women who have applied for the position,  seven  live  in  Oconee County.
Watkinsville resident Michael Brown is a partner in Brown & Stephens, a firm of two ex-UGA
football  players  who  practice family law and criminal defense.
Watkinsville  resident  Eric Eberhardt  is  a  partner  with Eberhardt & Hale in Athens. He is a “trial specialist” and has served as a traffic court solicitor in Oconee County. He was previously an assistant district attorney.
Oconee  County  resident Patrick  Haggard  practices  in Oconee  County.  His  practice includes civil litigation, domestic relations, personal injury and creditor bankruptcy.
Watkinsville resident Pamela Hendrix ran an unsuccessful campaign against David Sweat for his Superior Court seat last November, earning 26 percent of the votes cast.
Watkinsville resident Robert Judson Huff is an attorney with a practice in Watkinsville, his hometown.
He has been a real estate attorney and was previously attorney for the both Bishop and Watkinsville.
He was a former associate judge for Oconee County Juvenile Court.
Watkinsville resident Eric Norris is magistrate judge in Oconee County and has a private practice in
Watkinsville.
Watkinsville resident Ryan Swingle is a criminal defense attorney in Athens.
Patricia Barron has been chief magistrate judge for Athens-Clarke County since 2002. She worked as an attorney for Georgia Legal Services for 20 years.
Michael Coleman is a past chief magistrate judge. He lost a bid for Superior Court judge in 2002.
Donarell Green is a partner in Green and Green in Athens, a firm that specializes in personal injury and criminal defense. He was a staff attorney previously for the Georgia Legal Services Program.
Phillip Griffeth is a criminal defense lawyer in Athens.
Ryan Hope is the chief assistant solicitor general in Athens-Clarke County.
Regina Quick is a family law practitioner in Athens.
Jason Slider is a partner with Lavender, Baker & Slider, with offices in Resource Valley on Jennings Mill Road. His areas of law include real estate, business law, criminal law, personal injury,
and general litigation.
Nancee Tomlinson focuses on criminal, juvenile and family law from her Athens office. She was a staff attorney for the Athens Justice Project for one year.

JNC Receiving Nominations for Opening in Western Judicial Circuit

The Judicial Nominating Commission for the state of Georgia, created by an executive order of Gov. Nathan Deal, is now engaged in the process of receiving names of persons to fill a vacancy on the Western Judicial Circuit created by the resignation of the Hon. Steve C. Jones.

Members of the Bar and of the public are invited to submit nominations for these positions. Such names should be sent to the Commission by March, 18, 2011, by letter addressed to Judicial Nominating Commission, c/o Dana McGuire, 600 Peachtree St. NE, Suite 5200, Atlanta, GA 30308-2216, by fax to 404-962-6919 or by email to dana.mcguire@troutmansanders.com.

To each person nominated, the Commission will send an application package to be returned for receipt on or before April 1, 2011. The commission will meet to interview applicants the week of April 18, 2011. Applicants will be notified of the time for their interview. All interviews will be held at the State Bar of Georgia, 104 Marietta St., Atlanta, GA 30303.

The Commission will select and recommend to the Governor from among those persons found to be "qualified" or "well qualified" a short list of up to five persons for this position.
