Oconee County Parks and Recreation Department Needs Your Vote!

Help the Hoops court of Herman C. Michael Park near Eastville get even better than it once was with your computer.

Here is something we can all get behind - the aged basketball courts need our help to get repairs thanks to LeBron James and Sprite. The courts are about 20 years past their prime. There are lots of crumbly edges and cracks in the cement. We can really use your vote on this one. Please help the Oconee County Parks and Recreation Department win this award and help Oconee County get an improved outdoor basketball court without those painful outdoor unfriendly double rims. $35K goes a long way to helping our kids play a whole lot better basketball. How 'bout it?
Sincerely,
Dan Matthews

Support To Win Up To $35,000 In Grants

Watkinsville, May 17 2011 - This month, Oconee County Parks and Recreation Department can score a slam-dunk for a local basketball court with the click of a mouse. Herman C. Michael Park Outdoor Courts is one of 26 finalists in the Sprite Spark Parks Project, and if it gains enough support, the court could be awarded up to $35,000 in refurbishment grants.

The Sprite Spark Parks Project is a multi-year commitment to build and restore play environments where teens, families and neighbors can get outside and be active. The first phase of the program, which focuses on basketball courts, kicked off in February. Since then, people across the country have logged on to sprite.com and facebook.com/Sprite to nominate local courts they wish to receive improvement grants.

On May 8, the top nominees - including Herman C. Michael Park Outdoor Courts - were selected as finalists. Until June 10, supporters can log on to sprite.com or facebook.com/Sprite to vote for their courts to win one of 21 grants to fund items such as new rims, backboards, resurfacing and art installations. Seven courts will be awarded $35,000 in funding. An additional 14 locations will receive $20,000 each.

The Sprite Spark Parks Project gives Oconee County residents a chance to go online and show their support for a critically important play space in our community,? said Whitney Byce, Community Programs Coordinator. Our goal is to improve the Herman C. Michael Park Outdoor Courts and make it a safe, fun place where our youth can come together and be active in a positive way.?

Through the Sprite Spark Parks Project, Sprite will invest approximately $2 million into building or revamping more than 150 basketball courts, community spaces, playgrounds and athletic fields in at least 36 American cities throughout 2011. As a result, an estimated one million young people will have greater access to recreational spaces where they can be inspired to be active and creative.
