Dear Moore's Ford members and Friends,
Preparations are underway for our 15th Annual Moore's Ford Christmas Party, set for 6 p.m. this coming Saturday, December 10.
Thanks to Susan Tate, we are gathering at her lovely home on the Oconee River, 140 River Oak Way, Athens, GA 30605. See directions below.
Whether coming or not, PLEASE RSVP. Our November 17 email invitation elicited exactly one RSVP. That is a little spooky, folks. I did make some phone calls, and yes, there are Moore's Ford people headed for Susan's.
Will make more calls on Tuesday.
But please - do RSVP and also let us know what dish you are bringing.
If we have already talked, no need to RSVP again.
Marvin Nunnally and the Athens' Emancipation Proclamation Committee hosted a real nice banquet last Saturday. Waymond, Elzata, Rich, Janice and a friend of Elzata's attended for the MFMC. Lots of civil rights workers were honored. Special thanks to Waymond for getting us there!
We are also invited to attend their Emancipation program at 10 am, Sat., Dec. 31, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Athens. Admission is free.
Don't forget: SAVE THAT DATE, April 20-22 for The Gathering in Newnan, GA. See below:
Take care, y'all, and happy holidays!

"I can't wait to see you all," says Susan. "Here are directions."
Directions to Susan's house:
FROM ATLANTA:
Take I-85 north EITHER to Jefferson, then to 129 to Athens and turn south onto Loop 10, OR
I-85 north to 316 and then onto Loop 10 south following UGA signs.
Loop 10 is AFTER the Hwy. 78 Athens exit of 316 – you'll also go through two intersections with traffic lights while on 316 just before Loop 10: Jimmie Daniel Rd. and the Oconee Connector – (get in the far right lane as soon as you go through the Oconee Connector intersection).
On Loop 10 coming from the west (Atlanta), go past the Watkinsville/Timothy road exit and take the Milledge Avenue - North 15 exit. Skip the College Station Rd. directions in the next paragraph & proceed to S.M. directions.
FROM ATHENS:
FROM College Station Road: turn right on Riverbend Rd. (just outside the loop) and left onto Riverbend Pkwy at the top of the hill . . .
FROM south Milledge Avenue: turn left on Riverbend Rd. (one-tenth of a mile outside the loop) and right onto Riverbend Pkwy at the stop sign . . .
GO approximately 1.3 miles on Riverbend Pkwy, then left onto River Oak Way (it's after the apartment complexes, condominiums and a number of houses in River Oaks--not long after you pass Ridgewood Way on the right). My house is the second house on the right, # 140 River Oak Way.
All you can see from the street is the roof and a couple of windows. The number is on the mailbox at the street.

Susan has a beautiful, wooded, multilevel home on the Oconee River. We hope this date works for y'all. A backup date for December 17 is also possible for Susan. Susan G. and her associates emailed this request for proposals for The Gathering several weeks ago.Dear ATRR members and friends:
We are pleased to share details about an upcoming Alliance for Truth and Racial Reconciliation gathering in April, 2012.
The goals for the conference include:
1. reconvening and revitalizing ATRR
2. sharing successes and challenges with continuing memorial efforts
3. exploring new possibilities for common work around ending racism and its legacies
We will meet in Newnan, Georgia. The full program will be Saturday, April 21, with welcoming events on Friday evening and a closing memorial and march on Sunday morning.
We are seeking brief (no more than two paragraphs) proposals for panels or sessions on the following topics:
1. the relevance of memorial groups today? What does the work today look like?
2. current hate crimes: prevention and education
3. how do we build a new movement, especially that addresses apathy and involves young people?
4. highlight new groups to ATRR as well as those that have emerged since our last conference in 2007
5. how might the arts promote this work?
6. what are the challenges/solutions to sustaining this work? what are its best practices?
7. what does civil rights/human rights education look like today?
8. what have been the negative reactions to memorials and what might we learn from them?
9. what are research-based approaches?
10. what issues face us today? (disproportionate representation of blacks in the judicial system, etc.) and how might our coalition address them?
Please submit your proposals by January 15, 2012. The planning committee will notify panelists by February 15, 2012.
We are able to offer a limited number of scholarships for organizations that are members of ATRR (www.atrr.org). We can offer up to $200 reimbursement for purchased gas, or $200 per ticket toward the reimbursement of airfare for two members from each group. We can also offer two hotel rooms for each member organization. All meals on Saturday will be provided for all registered participants.

Schedule court repair for different times than Carlos Strong Basketball Academy
Everyone knows I am a big proponent of the Oconee County Parks and Recreation Department. I have also been very critical of some of the aspects of the Oconee Veterans Park facilities in terms of some design and execution, and to the OCPRD's credit, they have generally responded favorably of at least taking my suggestions into consideration if not out and out remedying the situation. Somehow on the north end of the new gym, when we would receive a particularly ferocious storm coming in from just the right angle, water and rain would seep in under the doors and got under the wonderful wooden basketball court.
Now the swollen water-logged basketball court was a long time in developing with the precipitation and a short time in correcting, but why on a Sunday during the first attempt at the new Carlos Strong Basketball Academy? A former NBA player and McDonald's All American should not have to be pushing a broom around the court mid-session to remove the sawdust from the basketball court. But I understand the workman in the corner having to chisel out the soggy flooring at a time when he can. And Sunday was when he could get out their a start removing/replacing the warping court.
Now my son missed the first session (due to a previous commitment to Perfectly Polished at the YMCA), but I drove out to Veterans Park to scope it out where I saw a couple of his old football teammates competing furiously (along with a dozen or so other boys and girls of various degrees of basketball talent) to win the knock-out competition. I know the person working on the court will get it finished and sealed in time for the next week's practices as the rec teams have begun their skills and scrimmages to get ready for the regular season. There is always a demand for the limited amount of court time this time of year, and there are never enough courts during this time of year. Now if we can get rid of the old dangerous rubberized torn ACL waiting to happen floors at Malcom Bridge and Colham Ferry schools....but I guess we could still be playing or practicing on the dead spots at the old Rocket Gym, which they were still doing well into the the 1990s. We went to an OCAF art sale there instead this busy weekend.
In other semi-related local basketball news:

In other semi-related local basketball news:
- They kept a chilly Clarke County Middle School team out in the cold early Saturday morning at a tightly locked up Oconee County High School during the Premier League preseason tournament while Oconee County High School students took the SAT test.
- Athens Academy's 6th grade boys beat Clarke Middle and Oconee Middle but lost to Madison in the elimination round of the tourney.
- Oconee County Rescue vehicles and fire trucks responded well to an apparent false alarm Sunday night at Athens Academy.
- Apparently someone pulled an alarm in the big gym on the other side of the lake
- Thank goodness for the Emergency Response workers, the blue collar guy working on the floor, and Coach Carlos Strong and his assistant working with the kids to improve their jump shots.
- Work should be done by February on the outdoor courts thanks to two checks of $17,500.00 from Sprite and as much in house work as possible on the courts located where the oldest tennis courts were/are at Herman C. Michael Park.
- We can work better together to coordinate everybody having a chance at those precious few basketball courts and gymnasiums when they need it.
Georgia Senate race turns nasty | Online Athens
And then there is this race. And I thought I was being unfairly questioned about my yard in the mayor's race after being assured there would be no personal attacks or weird questions by the host of the forum, and having unnamed people call up my ex-girlfriends to get dirt on me, and having rumors spread about my supposed sexuality (or lack thereof), or having local people in power tip off others in the local GOP about a letter I got seven years ago about my unkempt car port from the Watkinsville Code Enforcement officer (you know how long it has been since my son rode a big wheel?), or having an elderly blogger demonstrate her ignorance about me in public multiple times, I guess it is what we have devolved to in the attempt at electing our peers to represent us in government. Stick to the issues, people. Stay out of my recycling and my yard. In the good news from Morgan Manor Estates, I am glad my neighbors are finally removing the Camaro in their backyard that had been there for more than a decade.

GOP forum for House District 25 runoff turns testy
Does anyone wonder why politics is such a turn off for the vast majority of the electorate? It is largely because of reactions and over-reactions like this. There is a run-off election tomorrow in Hall County and it reads like both candidates are boobs. I just listened to Tim Bryant avoid asking too many relevant questions to both of these candidates on his new Monday edition of his radio show on NewsTalk 1340 WGAU. Boob #1 wanted to do away with the EPA, then he didn't. Brother-in-law of outgoing State Rep./good old boy James Mills in boob#2 did not seem all that much more clued in as to why people should want to elect him either. Something about questions and notes (and those being ripped out of his hands) and personal attacks and being tipped off about questions or not. This article sheds a little more light on it. Seems when Lieutenant Governonr Lowell "Casey" Cagle and Georgia governor Nathan Deal began appointed all their local friends to all the political prestige positions within the Georgia State government, they left the cupboard a little bare in their home of Hall County in terms of candidates one could be somewhat proud of to support. The comments are particularly enlightening as to what a true disgrace this race has become.

Last hundred shots of my photos of the Watkinsville Christmas Parade 2011
The Watkinsville Christmas parade is always an entertaining experience for all those involved. I had the pleasure once again to ride my semi-recumbent bicycle with my neighbors the Marbuts who own Sunshine Cycles in Athens and Watkinsville. This is my third year with them in the parade.
Their son Seth and my son Lowell are good friends and almost the same age. They play basketball together when they are not tearing down goals or otherwise doing things that pre-teen boys do to get in trouble. Honestly they are both great kids and very well behaved and conscientuous.
My buddy Chris Bartenfeld from Bartenfeld Electricians in Athens came over and rode as well. We were coming from a Premier League pre-season basketball game and were quite lucky to make the parade with some 10,000 people and all their cars along the parade route.
I was very proud to set my son out with his newly refurbished Raleigh bike (thanks Howie) sans helmet (yes I know) at Lawanna and Wilson and told him to find the Sunshine entry while I drove my big red truck to the house and parked it to get on my bike. Lowell followed some cyclists to the left and peddled to the end of the route but eventually found me and we rode to station #24 along the long procession.
Many thanks to all those involved who volunteer their time and efforts in making what has become an annual event we can all be quite proud of. I am certain many parents share my concern about kids running out onto Main Street with seemingly blind regard to traffic (be it horse drawn, human powered, pick up truck or tractor) but so far the toll has been naught when it comes to the slow motion movement along the Barnett Shoals and Main Street thoroughfares.
