Everyone is welcome to every Oconee County Democratic Committee meeting (especially candidates)
The Oconee County Democratic Committee has two meetings (June 21 and July 19) before the GOP Primary on July 31. We welcome any and all candidates, voters, media, and any other interested individuals to ANY AND ALL meetings ANYTIME, be they Republican, Democratic, independent, Green, Libertarian or none of the above.
The only exception to that in the decades I have been involved with the local Democratic party are the annual caucuses, and these are not caucuses.
To anyone who has either attended or involved themselves in any of the political forums, God bless you, but for God's sake, they are generally incredibly contrived and boring for the most part. Since the Democratic party has no candidates this time around, and we would like to be involved in the local political process, we have encouraged our more active and voting members to "cross over" and select a Republican ballot to get our two cents worth in the local political process. I have done this for every Primary election since I moved to Oconee County in the early 1990s. I choose to try to do something more intimate and available for anyone to attend, and thus we are inviting any and all candidates to our next two meetings.
It seems some members of the local gossip society have accused us as a party of all sorts of nefarious measures to ensure the balance of power remains or is shifted from one part of the GOP to another (or remains the same). While I would like to think we could truly be king or queen makers in these local elections, the fact of the matter remains I think some people are getting angry over nothing once again. Yes we have invited some candidates to the first meeting out of courtesy and of their initiative (something I like to see in my candidates of any political party). No we are not playing favorites other than contested races. No I would not like to see every candidate show up at 7:00 pm at the Government Annex in the Thursday, June 19 (although they are all welcome to attend). I think a half dozen candidates are about as much as anyone can truly be expected to absorb in one evening. We are going to give five minutes at the most for each candidate to talk about themselves and about as much time
Yes I am taking great pleasure in throwing a monkey wrench in the best laid plans of the local GOP apparatus, but that has truly never been my Prime Directive or motive in doing the things the way I do them. Yes I tend to take an unusual approach to my political decisions. No I do not give a damn how some people might be pissed off about this. Yes I think Democratic supporters and Republicans should work together for a better Oconee County for all us. Yes we would like you to attend our meeting at 1291 Greensboro Highway in the Government Annex at 7:00 pm Thursday, June 21 and July 19. Look for the framed portraits of President Barack Obama and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack in a room with about twenty chairs. Could that be another constraint? Yes it could.
