Sheriff Scott Berry joins Melvin Davis and Tammy Gilland at next Oconee Dems meeting 7 pm 6/21

Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry just called to let us know he will be addressing the Oconee County Democratic Committee meeting 7:00 pm Thursday, June 21, 2012 at Government Annex at 1291 Greensboro Highway along with Oconee County Board of Commissioners chairman Melvin Davis and candidate Tammy Gilland.

We will expect no more than five more of oratory from the candidates and have a large gong set up to ring every time they mention the word "conservative" (just kidding about that last one). But the choice of words is always something I pay attention, along with diction and brevity.

I would challenge the candidates to demonstrate to us their independence and difference from the standard Republican orthodoxy and perhaps make distinctions on their positions even from those who they are at the same meeting at. Then again, they could discuss American Idol or the Hatfields and McCoys if they really wanted to.

THis has next to nothing to do with Oconee County with the possible exception of the location of his former office, but a former colleague of mine on the radio got popped today for four counts. James Whipple of Bogart bonded out on child porn, pot, and possession of a firearm during commission of crime charges

Sheriff Scott Berry announces the arrest of Ian James Whipple (23) of Jefferson Avenue in Bogart on one count of Computer Pornography (child pornography), one count of Violation of Georgia Controlled Substances Act, and one count of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime. Bond was set by the court at $50,000. Whipple has bonded out of jail. The arrest st ems from an investigation that began when the OCSO received information from the Athens Clarke County Police leading to the obtaining of a search warrant for Whipple's residence and computers. That warrant was executed on July 1st. Upon entering the residence, it was discovered that Whipple also was cultivating marijuana plants. Whipple was not at the residence at the time the warrant was executed. He was arrested on July 3rd when he was located by OCSO deputies.
