The Board of Trustees and the Headmaster Search Committee are pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Kay Betts as interim headmaster of Athens Academy for the 2013-2014 school year. Mr. Chambers and Ms. Betts will be working together until she assumes this position on July 1 of this year to ensure a smooth transition.
Ms. Betts is the principal consultant of Bettstrategic Group, advising independent schools on marketing, strategic planning, benchmarking, and variety of other education issues. Previously, she was the head of Episcopal School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; academic dean at Marist School in Atlanta; and a department head and teacher at St. Mary's School in Memphis, Tennessee. Ms. Betts received a bachelor's degree from Centre College and a master's in Educational Leadership from Bank Street College in New York. She has attended special programs at both Stanford and Harvard Universities and has served on many boards, including the Southern Association of Independent Schools and the Southern Headmasters' Association.
Students and faculty will have the opportunity to meet Ms. Betts in the coming weeks, and we will be planning a time for parents to meet her as well.   In addition, I want to assure you that the search committee will continue its effort to find a permanent headmaster with the same care and diligence it has demonstrated thus far.
Sincerely,
Gene Howard
Chairman, Board of Trustees
