Bryan Long of Better Georgia confirms addressing Oconee County Democratic Committee 7 pm Thursday, August 15
Bryan Long, Executive Director of Better Georgia, will be addressing the Oconee County Democratic Committee 7:00 pm Thursday, August 15th at the Oconee County Government Annex - 1291 Greensboro Highway (State Route 15) in south central downtown Watkinsville. Admission is free, but donations will be requested at the end of the evening to help support the outstanding work of the organization Better Georgia.
According to their website:
Better Georgia is here to make sure elected officials listen to Georgia families, small business owners and real people. We want our elected officials to pass sensible laws and policies that make Georgia a better state.
Today, Georgia faces historic levels of unemployment with nearly half a million workers looking for jobs. Georgia has the 3rd highest poverty rate in nation, with two cities ranked among our nation’s 10 poorest places to live. Georgia’s students are defaulting on student loans faster than the national average. Meanwhile, businesses refuse to open in Georgia because our representatives pass laws intended to please a small, extreme group.
It’s time someone other than lobbyists and big-pocket corporations demand action from our elected officials.
Better Georgia will.
We’re a new and growing non-partisan organization that will make sure Georgia’s leaders focus on real problems for real Georgians.
Working with partners around the state, our goal is to:
Long has helped take down (or at the very least shed some light upon) many corrupt Georgia Republicans (and their practices) in this state including former State Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers among others.
Before founding Better Georgia in November 2011, Bryan started his career as a journalist, followed by more than five years with the Atlanta-based communications firm Jackson Spalding.
At Jackson Spalding, Bryan managed crisis communications, corporate communications and social media for some of Atlanta’s largest and most influential companies.
Previously, he worked as a reporter and editor with CNN.com, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Atlanta Business Chronicle.
Bryan is well versed on social marketing, a skill which took him to the Democratic National Convention in Denver and the Republican National Convention in St. Paul in 2008.
Bryan’s two plus years at CNN.com honed his ability to work under pressure as he served as Writer/Editor for CNN.com’s breaking news team, where he covered such wide-ranging topics as the war in Iraq and its aftermath; the rebuilding of New York’s post-September 11 skyline; the safety of biotech labs after the nation’s anthrax scares; and the 2004 Presidential race and election. He was co-writer and co-editor for CNN.com’s first blog, a political and celebrity-filled report from the halls of Boston’s Fleet Center at the 2004 Democratic National Convention.
In October 2009, Bryan spent a week studying clean water projects in Haiti for Pure Water for the World and Midtown Atlanta Rotary Club. Bryan is a member of Leadership Atlanta’s class of 2012. He also serves on the Board of Directors for AID Atlanta, an organization that fights against the AIDS epidemic in metro Atlanta.
A native of Troy, Alabama, Bryan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Alabama upon completion of a double-major curriculum in Journalism and American Studies.
This is the second meeting in a row that the Oconee County Democratic Committee has play host to speeches from dynamic young Georgians affiliated with non-partisan groups. The Oconee Democrats hosted Jerry Gonzalez of the Georgia Associated of Latino Elected Officials at an event at Ashford on Main June 20, 2013. The Better Georgia event is back at the Oconee Dems' usual meeting place in the USDA meeting room (Room B102) of the Oconee County Government Annex 7:00 pm Thursday, August 15.
