Senate Dems Say Deal Should Pay Ethics Jury Award
Henson calls for independent ethics investigations
|
Atlanta, Ga. - April 4, 2014 - Senate Democratic Leader Steve Henson (D-Tucker) issued the following statement after a jury found Stacey Kalberman, the state's former ethics commission director, was unfairly forced from her position for investigating Gov. Nathan Deal's 2010 campaign finances.
"Democrats have repeatedly called for the state's ethics commission to be more independent. Time after time, during this and previous legislative sessions, Democrats took the well to question why nothing was being done to fix this problem.
"Today's ruling is even more reason the Governor should face an independent investigation to account for the many accusations leveled at him.
"Not only should the current chair of the ethics commission step down, but Governor Deal should pay the $700,000 jury award to Stacey Kalberman from his campaign account."
Henson said that for several years Democrats have introduced legislation that would require an independent ethics commission, along with a funding mechanism for the agency that is not subject to political whim. Those bills were never given committee hearings by the GOP-led General Assembly.
