We moved Central Schoolhouse closer to the road
On the evening when the withdrawl of the proposed truck stop in Farmington from the planning commission agenda was the big news, other items of interest occured at the joint meeting of the Oconee County Citizens Advisory Committee on Cultural and Recreational Affairs in the grand jury room of the courthouse.
I made the motion, and Chiropractor Mike Streetman seconded, moving the recommendation for the location of the Central Schoolhouse from the back of Heritage Park at a cul-de-sac to the front of the park in the former location of a museum.
This will be more representative of what an early 20th century town structure might have looked like, according to John Cleaveland of the Oconee County Historical Soceity, rather than the reprehensible cul-de-sac design. There are way too many cul-de-sacs in Oconee County already.
The museum will still be located somewhere nearby in the front of the park, near Highway 441, possibly in a cotton gin like structure some 5-10-15-20 years in the future. There are also plans for an amphitheater in the front of the park.
St. Mary's Hospital enterted into a $5,000 sponsorship deal with the Oconee County Recreation Department - giving $3,500 to be the second sponsor of the disc golf course. Papa John's remains the top flight sponsor.
Recreation director John Gentry will get a little rest and recreation with his family in Disneyworld this weekend with his seven year old daughter after getting his photo taken in Iraq having dinner served to him by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and a two-star general.
The recreation department uses every non-church, non-high school gymnasium this side of Athens Academy in the county for its overcrowded basketball leagues. They are also sponsoring a table tennis tournament soon. There will be a touch the truck contest on April 22.
They have two new UGA interns including football player Josh Brock. The new park Oconee Community Center will be hopefully completed in 18 months and the construction and dirt moving can not begin too soon, according to acting director Don Oliver. We should check out the new recreation department website off of http://www.oconeecounty.com according to Lisa Davol. She also said there are heart defibralators at every facility under use.
The county recreation department under went a partnership with the Board of Education to redo the gymnasium floor at Colham Ferry School a couple years ago. Colham Ferry use to have one of those hideous psuedo rubber floors that could never be completely dust free even if you wet mopped it.
Fencing has improved at the Bogart Recreation Facility but the netting may not be ready for the start of practice but hopefully the start of the season. I think registration started this week for Oconee County Little League.
Oconee County will be advertised on a panel of the official state of Georgia road map given out at all the welcome centers. There will be a story about Oconee County in one of those travel magazines.
