An open letter to Governor Sonny Perdue
Dear Governor Perdue:
If you are looking to get re-elected, I have a sure fire method to ensure your second term as the Governor of Georgia: veto SB 386.
As a University of Georgia alumni, you can surely appreciate the desire of Athens Clarke County residents to want to remain one whole voting district with the district encompassing the University of Georiga community. That would include the counties of Oconee, Oglethorpe and Clarke in one state senate district.
As a former Democrat, you know how dangerous it can be to light a fire under the ass of your opponent. Bob Smith gathered the kindling, Brian Kemp poured the gasoline, and Ralph Hudgens has the match. The Athens Arsonist Area Chamber of Commerce is guilty of torching any trust remaining in the Classic City to the point where their members are not renewing their memberships in droves.
If you sign 386, you write your own political obituary. Cathy Cox will kick your ass. Mark Taylor will beat you to a bloody pulp at the polls in November. The Democrats are organized, angry and have a big target with you on it.
If you veto 386, your re-election is assured. Your vote totals will increase by at least 30%. Most of the Republicans are going to vote for you anyhow. A large portion fo the independent and Demcoratic voters have ties to the University of Georgia and will remember how you bucked the Republican redistricting retardation and you will occupy the Gold Dome for a second term. You could usher in an era of Georgia Republican domination that not even Ralph Reed could derail.
If you sign 386, you give all the ammunition Democrats will need to wipe you off the map. So the decision is yours Sonny: do the politically expendient thing and maybe get to keep Jane Kidd out of the State Senate. Or do the courageous thing and have a true mandate for Republican policy you could implement until 2010 (when the next redistricing will be). Have a spine Sonny and Georgia voters will stampede you back into the Governor's mansion for a second term. Or appease a few sleazy Republican sign merchants and developers and LOSE LOSE LOSE. Kemp will also lose the Ag Commish race. You will not have a Lt. Gov be it Cagle or Reed. You may lose the Secretary of State race and even the Insurance Commissioner or Education Secretary.
