Letter/petition to the Watkinsville Council
Not from me, but from Jim Shearon of Ashford Manor fame:
27 July 2006
Dear Mayor Luken and City Council Members,
We acknowledge that you have been working steadily and digilenty with the RDC to format new ordinances for the City and that it is an extensive and complicated process. None the less we are greatly concerned over the possibility that there could be additions, renovation/remodeling, removal of buildings on properties within the Historic/Business District that would not be consistent with the look and atmosphere of the existent buildings and the vision of the City that came out of last year’s Visioning Sessions.
We fear that potential developers within this area might not show the sensibility and aesthetic exhibited in the Town Center development. This fear is reinforced by the slovenly care of many of our downtown properties including Commercial, residential and undeveloped plats by their current owners.
The Urban Forrest Ordinance and the new Sign Ordinance (which did have a moratorium associated with it),enacted by you Have been significant first steps in protecting the look and character of our City. We need the new ordinances, and covenants to ensure that the structural elements of our City have the same protections and direction.
We the undersigned residents, property owners and business persons in the City of Watkinsville ask that you enact a moratorium of the issue of building permits for any new Commercial, Residential, Office/professional, or Industrial structures to be built within the “Downtown/Historic District. The Moratorium should include the issue of Permits for the demolition, removal, restoration or remodeling of all existent structures within the “Downtown/Historic District.
We suggest that the “Historic/Business District” be an expansion of the current South Main Street Historic District to encompass:
1.Main Street from the current Historic designation at the South end of the City Northward to include the Bethel Baptist Church.
Towards the West to include the Janet Rankin Round House and Water Street from Highway 15 to Harden Hill Road.
On the East side of Main Street, Third Street to Rocket Field, School Street to OCAF, Whitehall Road to the Cemetery, Barnett Shoals to the Railroad tracks, and
Greensboro Highway to the Railroad Tracks.
